Saturday Snippet: A Teetotaler, Are You?

The following snippet is taken from
Escape from Gold Mountain
a Gold Mountain book

After glancing over and noticing Luke’s beverage of choice, the tall redhead snorted with derision. “A teetotaler, are you? Rather hot out for that.”
Luke straightened to his full height. He kept his words soft and non-challenging. “Don’t need liquid courage right now, just something to cut the dust. Not sure if I can trust the water here.”
One thing Luke had learned in his travels was that the Irish and others who had worked on railroad crews across the Great Plains had suffered bouts of cholera, dysentery, and other diseases caused by bad water. On the other hand, the Chinese railroad crews drank tea made with boiled water. They stayed healthy.
The big red-haired man laughed. “Mayhap the truth of it is you can’t hold your liquor, eh?” He turned to the barkeeper. “Fetch me a beer. Tex, here, will have one, too.”
The other man named Tex chuckled deep in his chest. “Y’all ain’t one to be talking about not holding liquor, Charley, not after the times y’all went plumb crazy after getting likkered up. They ever let y’all back in Lundy after the way y’all cut up that town a couple of years back?”

Saturday Snippet: The-Food-That-Grows-on-Water

The following snippet is taken from
Escape from Gold Mountain

Luke sought out a restaurant reputed to serve good, cheap food. From his table, he spied a meal that appealed to him being consumed by a fellow diner. Through hand gestures and the pidgin English of the Chinese waiter, Luke ordered the same dish.

The rice, which made up the bulk of the meal, piqued Luke’s interest. He studied the familiar-looking grain. He tasted it and broke out in a wide smile. Although this rice was white and had come from China clear across the Pacific Ocean, it was very similar to what his mother’s people in Minnesota called the-food-that-grows-on-water.

Saturday Snippet: It Is For You I Wait

This snippet comes from
Otto's Offer
Book 3
in both the multi-author Lockets & Lace series
and in the author's own Atwell Kin series

The jeweler turned back to Otto. “Something I have to show you. A good price I offer if you wish to buy.” He leaned down and unlocked one of the cabinets below the shelf on the counter with the thick glass covering. He brought out a gold locket shining with newness and handed it to Otto.
Otto brought his palm closer to his face to better study the design etched on the front of the heart-shaped locket. He had seen lockets before, but mostly they were oval or round, and they tended to be larger. Yet, from the heft of the small ornament in his hand, he could tell the jeweler had not skimped on the amount of gold used. Filigree scrollwork surrounded the floral design in the center.
Otto turned the heart over. On the back, bordered top and bottom by etchings of the same design as the front, was an inscription. “All my love, Otto.”
Otto looked into the face of the man who had not said a word since he had handed him the gold locket. “It looks like it was made for another.”
The man nodded. “Ya. A customer with same name paid me to make for wedding gift. He was soon to marry. Later, he comes to me, very sad—what you say, in mourning. With the fever his sweetheart died. His money he asked me to return. I give him most.”
“Could you not have redone the locket to take the name out?”
The jeweler nodded. “Ya. Each time I get it out to take out name, something tells me, wait. When I hear you speak German and know your name, I know it is for you I wait.”

Otto's Offer is currently on sale for 99 cents until Tuesday, August 20th. PLEASE CLICK HERE for the book description and the purchase link.

Saturday Snippet: We Made a Good Bargain

 The following snippet is from
Escape from Gold Mountain

A knot of apprehension tightened in Loi’s stomach. Out of the corner of her eye, she glanced his way several times—enough to know he inspected her openly. Loi’s flesh crawled as his eyes raked her body from head to toe. Loi felt convinced this man had no proper family teaching and was of the worst sort. She began to understand where the term “snakehead” had come from. No matter how much Heng resented her, how could he turn her over to a man like him?
The man’s face broke into a lascivious grin, revealing rotting teeth. “She’ll do.” He reached inside his left sleeve and pulled out a cloth bundle. He unwrapped a stack of coins and handed several to Heng. “We made a good bargain.” He hesitated and cocked his head. “What did you tell her?”
“You take her to Gum Saan to find her a husband.”
Loi’s entire body clenched and her apprehension exploded within her as the man reared his body back and burst out laughing.
“You have prepared her well. She will give me no trouble.” The snakehead grabbed Loi’s arm. “Come. You are mine now. We go to the ship.”
