...Eleanor paused and met his gaze. “I’m sorry. I never learned your name so I could thank you properly.”
“Perry. Name’s Frankie Perry. Here, let me carry that baggage.” Grinning, Frankie held out both hands.
“Frankie Perry, who isn’t Italian. Nice to meet you, Mr. Perry.” Eleanor softly chuckled as she handed over her luggage.
“Frankie, doll. Just call me Frankie.” Frankie, the enthusiasm gone from his voice, turned his head aside.
Blinking, Eleanor watched how he responded to her quip. She wondered what she said wrong.
“Nice suitcases, by the way.” With raised eyebrows. Frankie nodded with appreciation as he studied them. “The hatbox is heavier than I expected. Must have more than a straw bonnet in there.”
“Oh, I think they’re ugly.” Eleanor laughed and shook her head before she leaned toward Frankie. “I bought the luggage at a secondhand store, and it’s a band box, not a hatbox. I have it packed with shoes and all sorts of things.” She lowered her voice to a mock whisper. “I suppose there are people who like nice, conservative colors like these. If I had the money, I would have bought brand-new suitcases—red suitcases. Wouldn’t that be keen, to be able to travel with classy red luggage?” She stuck her arm straight up in the air and danced a full circle on the balls of her feet.
“Yeah, doll, I can see you like red.” Shaking his head, Frankie grinned open-mouthed as his gaze took in Eleanor’s red cloche hat and the red wool scarf which showed at the top of her coat. “The way you’re prancing around, I’ll bet you’ve got red dancing shoes, don’t you? They’d suit you.”
