Speaking softly, Rose reached over and placed her palm on Marigold’s forearm. “What concerns me is, I’ve never known you to become so involved with a student before.”

          “I know.” Marigold blinked and gave a slight shake of her head. “I’ve never had a maternal bone in my body. I never wanted my own children. I love teaching, and I always draw close to my students. But, it has always been as a teacher who loves the children in her class, not like the attachment I’m feeling for Joey. I don’t understand it, but I feel the need to take care of him. I cannot turn my back on this boy.”

          “You’re maternal, Mari. You mothered me to death, even after I was too old to need someone to take care of me and tell me what to do.” Laughing, Rose sat back in her chair. “Sometimes, it drove me crazy, and I deeply resented it. But then I’d tell myself that you did it out of love.”

          “Maybe that’s it, Rose.” Sighing deeply, Marigold splayed her fingers as she pressed her palms against the tabletop and leaned forward. “For years after our parents died, I took my responsibility as your guardian seriously. Maybe I never felt the need to mother a child of my own because I always had you. But now, here you are, a married woman ready to have your own baby. I’d like to think you’ll always need me as a sister, but I guess a part of me is coming to grips with the realization you don’t need me to mother you anymore.”

          “That might be it, Mari. Maybe you need a child to mother more than you thought.” Rose offered a hint of a smile as she lifted her shoulders. “And, yes, Mari. I will always need you as my sister. Never doubt that.”
