“…That’s why I’ve got to get this laundry rinsed and the water wrung out so I can put it in the duffle. I’ll let you take it back to the boat while I see if she’ll allow me walk her back to her ship.”

          “You’ll let me? You expect me to take your duffle bag—the one full of wet clothes that will seep through the canvas and get my coat soaked—back to the boat while you chase after some dame?”

          “That’s what friends are for. I’ll find a way to pay you back.” Frankie turned from the board and walked toward the counter. He picked up the card with the information on the job in Anchorage and stuffed it into the pocket of his heavy wool pea coat—a holdover from his time in the Navy—and walked to the washing machine. “Those clothes ready to put through the wringer?”

          “Yeah, yeah. I got the plug pulled. You’re already halfway undressed, so it’s up to you to fish them out and start them through. I’ll crank the shaft.”

          “Thanks, Paulie.” In spite of the rinse water having already drained out, the clothes inside the tub were still sopping wet. Frankie reached a hand down and grabbed the top shirt. He twisted it to get rid of the excess water before feeding it into the wringer. After Paulo cranked the handle that turned the rollers, Frankie caught the shirt, shook out the creases, and loosely folded it before dropping it inside the heavy canvas bag. He continued to do the same with the rest of his shirts, pants, underwear, and socks.

          “You know, Frankie, Anchorage isn’t as big as Seattle, but it’s not that small, either.” As he turned the wringer handle, Paulo huffed out the sentence in time with the rotations. “If you don’t know her name and address, how do you think you’ll find her?”

          “Even if I can’t get her name and address out of her, I know she’s going to a job at the local telephone company. I’ll find her.”
