Quentin’s gaze focused on the building across the side alley that separated the hotel and restaurant from the depot building. He seldom spent the money to eat there but felt the impression he needed to dine here tonight. He tapped his front teeth together as he stared at the building he suddenly felt drawn toward.
First, he would visit the barber for a hair and beard trim, he decided. He would follow that with a stop at Helsa Bath House. Then he would return to his room and don his best suit, vest, and the ascot tie he bought on a whim on his last trip to Denver. He would show people in this town he knew how to dress properly for supper in a quality restaurant. Not that they care, but I do.
The thought that Royce Bainbridge and Lizett Millard might bring the new bride and the miner to the restaurant flashed through his mind. He pushed it aside. That’s not why I decided to eat there tonight—is it?
