Indianapolis Justice
Gamble on Judgment series, Book 2
by Zina Abbott
“I’m coming with my brother.” Her fists clenched, Stella stepped a quarter turn until she faced Harry and bent her upper body forward.
“I’m not here to do your bidding, bounty hunter.” Detective Duggan snorted and waved a hand dismissively. “You can come with me, and you all can wait in the holding cell. I don’t care how many days it takes until you get your money.”
Officer O’Reilly scrunched his face and, using his baton, scratched his head under the band of his police cap. “The way I be recollecting, the last blokes loaded in there were well in their cups and not holding their liquor, now were they? It might not be smelling so good for the lady.”
“My sister isn’t going anywhere near the city jail.” The skin of his face pink as his breaths came in heaves, Nathan puffed out his chest, and his eyes narrowed as his gaze shifted between the two policemen.
“Nathan, I won’t abandon you—”
“Miss Schoenfeld will not be coming with us, Officer O’Reilly.” After cutting off whatever Stella intended to say, Harry kept his gaze fixed on the two policemen, particularly the one who seemed far too anxious to get his hands on Nathan Schoenfeld. “Detective Duggan, you may return to the station and wait there, or you may wait here while I put her in a carriage to take her home. Then I will take Mr. Schoenfeld to the police station.”
Harry grabbed Nathan’s upper arm with one hand and placed his free hand on Stella’s elbow. He noticed Officer O’Reilly seemed to take the situation in stride, but Detective Duggan’s scowl advertised his displeasure.
“Really, Mr. Bradford, I sometimes grow weary of you trying to manage my life.” Stella threw her head back as she huffed. “Perhaps I wish to stay with Nathan as long as I can.”
Harry said nothing as—in spite of her resistance—he gently guided Stella to where the carriages for hire were lined up. After taking her valise from her and setting it into the carriage, he helped her up into the seat. He next handed fare money to the driver.
