The Bride Who series
“Are you sure you’re doing what’s best, Fiona? This idea of answering an advertisement in the newspaper and then courting through mail still strikes me as being odd.” Anna again cupped Fiona’s cheek to hold her daughter’s attention as her gaze sought that of her daughter’s.
“I believe so, Ma. From his letters, Mr. Bellamy impresses me as being a decent and reliable man. He forwarded two letters of recommendation. One was from the owner of the mercantile and the other was from a local pastor. Although the pastor said he didn’t know Mr. Bellamy well, since his ranch is far enough from Laramie City that he only makes it to church services three or four times a year, he has supported some of the church’s fund-raisers.”
“That’s encouraging. I would hope a pastor would be honest enough not to give a good recommendation if the man was a scoundrel. But, the fact this Mr. Bellamy lives so far from town raises another issue. It sounds like you will be isolated living on his ranch. Your home has always been in the city surrounded by people, including family. Are you sure you will be happy being so far from people, especially other women?”
“I…” Fiona hesitated and bit her lower lip. “There is nothing for me here, Ma. In some ways, because of the neighbors we have now, I feel too many of the men can’t get past me being poor and part Irish and…” She bit her lip. Since it upset her mother, who felt responsible for the way her wound healed, she decided not to mention it. “I’m already twenty-one, yet none of the local men have shown any interest in me, even with us now attending a protestant church.”
