Saturday Snippet: We Don't Have Mountains of Snow

The following snippet is taken from

Kate's Railroad Chef

Train Wreck in Jubilee Springs Book 3

(Also, Book 20 in Sweethearts of Jubilee Springs)

Kate clung to Dahlia as she stumbled forward. “Where are we going?”

“Away from the train. A couple of the cars have derailed, and they’re afraid the whole train could end up in the river. To your right, Kate. We have to get around the back of the coal car that jackknifed uphill. They sent someone to town to organize a rescue. They want us to wait up front by the engine until the rescuers come for us.”

Kate kept her eyes squinted to slits and her gaze on the ground. “Are we close to Jubilee Springs, then? Why aren’t we walking there?”

“Don’t you see all the snow ahead of us, Kate? An avalanche has blocked the tracks.”

At that point, Kate lifted her face and stared ahead. She widened her eyes at the high wall of snow in front of them. We don’t have mountains of snow like that in lower east Manhattan, now do we? She immediately regretted gazing at the white that appeared brilliant compared to the surrounding scene.

My next book to be published on March 19, 2021 is titled Mail Order Blythe. For this book, I'll be taking the reader back to 1878 Wyoming along the Union Pacific Railroad tracks to the town of Rawlins. Here is a hint about one event that took place in Rawlins during the time period of my story.

Saturday Snippet: She struggled to Recall Exactly What Happened

The following snippet is taken from

Kate's Railroad Chef

Train Wreck in Jubilee Springs Book 3

(Also, Book 20 in Sweethearts of Jubilee Springs)

Kate struggled to recall exactly what happened before she blacked out and came to with the throbbing pain in the front of her head. The three women had shared a picnic lunch Lizett brought. Then Dahlia pulled a book from her carpetbag to read. With no book of her own to help her pass the time, Kate offered to take turns with Dahlia if her seatmate wished to read out loud. They had done so until Dahlia chose to look at the scenery outside the window instead. As rare as books had been in her life, Kate had not been willing to pass up the opportunity to read while she could. She continued to read as Dahlia adjusted her carpetbag to serve as a pillow so she could rest.

The screech of the brakes and jerk of the coach heralded the impending disaster. Kate felt her entire body thrown forward. Still holding the book with both hands, she threw up her forearms, which hit the back of the bench in front of her. Her head then connected with her arms, and her entire body slid forward. Bracing her feet in front of her was all that kept her from being thrown to the floor.

Saturday Snippet: He Definitely Was Under Pressure

The following snippet is taken from

Kate's Railroad Chef

Train Wreck in Jubilee Springs

Book 3

This night, Garland definitely felt under pressure. Repeatedly, townspeople from Jubilee Springs as well as Monarch Bend located ten miles from the rail line came to his window asking when the train would arrive. He increasingly found himself gritting his teeth in order to maintain a calm, professional manner as he repeated what he knew, which was next to nothing. Among those who had appeared before him was Royce Bainbridge, the Prosperity Mine owner in charge of dealing with the brides coming for the miners. Garland could not think of a worse weekend for the newest bunch of brides, along with the woman from the bridal agency, to make the trip into Jubilee Springs.

Then again, there was no guarantee that train travel in these mountains over the next several months would be any better.

He also recognized Annie Flanagan, the woman who came to town to work as a maid for the Nighy family. Since she did not read or write, several weeks earlier he helped her write a letter to her sister. Annie encouraged her to choose the marriage prospect in Jubilee Springs so the two could live close to each other. Garland realized her sister, Kate, must have accepted Michael O’Hare’s marriage proposal and was due in on this train.
