“I think that song has been around for some time.” Eli cocked his head to the side. “Do you know the history behind figgy pudding?”
“It just so happens, I do.” She nodded and then repeated the history of puddings she had shared with the girls on Stir-up Sunday. “Are you ready to try some?” Her gaze surveyed the other three in the room. After a chorus of assents, she cut into and dished up four servings of the dessert. She deliberately left enough for Betty and Lewis to try later.
“Oh, this is good.” Blythe licked her lips as she swallowed. “I enjoy fruitcake, but this is really moist. I think I like it better.”
“Yes, it is good.” Jason nodded. He bit down. Suddenly, his body froze in place, and his eyes rounded. “Oh! Um!” His expression transitioning into a grimace, he hunched forward and worked his lips. After setting his fork down, he lifted his fingers to his mouth. “My apologies. I think your bakers must have accidentally dropped a nut shell in the batter.”
“Um, we didn’t use nuts.”
