          The skin between his eyebrows creasing, Andrew looked off to the side. “Lt. Burdock? I know who he is.”

          Hannah watched as Andrew turned back and studied her face. What is he thinking? Why do I not want to tell him my father gave Jake permission to court me?

 

          “What does he write about?”

          Hannah shrugged. “What it’s like to live on the frontier. He’s told me a few things about his family. Mostly he responds to what I write to him, even though the details of my family’s everyday life are not very exciting.”

          “Does he say much about what’s happening at the forts?”

          Hannah shook her head. “He doesn’t talk about the details of his work, just the weather and what the country is like.” Never would Hannah divulge that Jake occasionally shared his frustrations and opinions. He trusts me to keep his secrets. Surely, Andrew would accept that Jake talked about the weather. All men seemed to talk about the weather.

I originally started this book in 2014, but for several reasons, I never finished it. Now that I have the first book in the series,

Abilene Gamble,
