          Harry watched the woman set her valise next to her side before she reached into her reticule and pulled out a telegram, which she unfolded and showed to the deputy marshal. Their heads bobbing, the conversation continued amicably. Then, after something Ollie said, the woman’s body noticeably slumped, and she released a sigh.

          Harry narrowed his eyes to slits. Why does this young woman require the assistance of law enforcement? Maybe she wasn’t a mail order bride, after all. Was she trying to find someone? For all her manners and evidence of good breeding, had she gotten herself tangled up as a sweetheart or wife of some desperado? Surely, she was not asking directions to the land office in order to stake a claim she intended to prove up by herself?

          Ollie Thompson turned his gaze from the woman toward Harry.

          Harry dropped his arms to his sides and stood straight as their gazes met. Did Ollie intentionally motion him to join them? Harry raised an eyebrow.

          Ollie waved Harry over a second time.

          The woman also turned to look in his direction.

          Hot or not, Harry now wished he had worn his coat. He tugged at the bottom of his vest to straighten any wrinkles and adjusted his hat as he walked towards Ollie and the woman. He steeled himself against the look of revulsion that would twist her expression once he stood close enough for her to get a clear look at his face. The day no longer promises to be uneventful.
