Saturday Snippet: Don't Threaten Me, Detective

The following snippet was taken from

Indianapolis Justice

Gamble on Judgment series, Book 2

by Zina Abbott

“Don’t threaten me, Detective, or I’ll have your job.” In spite of the anger and annoyance coursing through him, Harry kept his voice quiet and calm. “I already showed you proof I am a member in good standing with the Indiana Bar. I have a signed receipt from your captain proving I have discharged my obligation of bringing Mr. Schoenfeld in on the warrant. I am free to act in whatever capacity is called for. Since there is no longer a conflict of interest, I am now this man’s lawyer, representing him pro bono for the purpose of protecting his rights, and his person, while he is here in this jail.”

“Doesn’t sound like it to me. He didn’t hire you to be his lawyer,” Duggan spoke the words through clenched teeth as he shook his head.

“No, but I do.” Stella’s voice rang loud and clear, cutting through the buzz of excitement in the building.

          The room fell silent.

The men in the room turned to stare at the two females who had intruded into their male domain.

Stella stood as straight and tall as one of the pillars which held up many a portico in Indianapolis. She lifted her chin with an air of confidence. With her reticule and fan hanging from her left wrist, her trembling hand gripping the handle of her closed parasol, its tip braced against the floor, gave the only hint of her uneasiness.
