Beulah
Christmas Quilt Brides, Book 13
by Zina Abbott
“Yes. I think your wife did well when she hired Miss Connor.” Feeling an awareness he could not define overtake him, Daniel turned his thoughts to the academy employee at his brother’s house. Mari called her Be-Be—and Daniel had come to think of her as such—but his brother called her Miss Connor.
Daniel had been known to join his brother in the kitchen—away from the parlor and the middle sitting room that served as classrooms—and a more relaxed atmosphere than found in the formal dining room where the students took their meals. He always enjoyed the presence of the woman who struck him as someone who should be taking care of her own home, not someone else’s. When she served him coffee as soon as he sat at the table with George, he often teased her that she did not need to wait on him. He could get his own coffee or let his brother do it. She usually responded with a smile and a comment to the effect that she had worked in a café for so many years, serving coffee was second nature. “Is Miss Connor planning to stay with you throughout the summer, or does she have other plans?” Why do I want to know? Daniel refused to admit that his thoughts strayed far too often to the woman and being around her caused his body to experience unwanted sensations—like his heart beating faster and his breathing rate increasing. Now they reached the storage shed, Daniel pulled his team to a halt and set the brake.
“Oh, yes. She’s staying. She is a jewel. I told Mari to do whatever it took to keep her.”
When it came to Be-Be, Daniel had to agree with his brother’s assessment. A bright jewel.
