Saturday Snippet: I Take It You Do Not Favor the Move

The  following is taken from my novel,

Virginia's Vocation

Book 19 in the series,

Lockets & Lace

Virginia felt like shrinking within herself as the store owner studied her.
“I take it you do not favor the move.”
Virginia turned her gaze towards her feet and shook her head. “Unfortunately, women do not have much of a say in matters like this even though we must face the same danger the men are so eager to risk.”
Why did she bare her soul to this stranger, she wondered? If her brothers knew, they both would chastise her thoroughly. They would once again subject her to the counsel she had heard multiple times. She should leave decisions of that nature up to the men because they were the ones responsible for seeing to the safety and welfare of the entire family.

Saturday Snippet: Manytalks Woman--How Much?

The  following is taken from my novel,
Diantha
Book 14 in the series,
The Widows of Wildcat Ridge
(This scene involves the secondary romance in the book.)

          “Manytalks Woman—how much?”

Caught off guard, Buck immediately turned to his right where a third Ute sat his horse and stared at him as if waiting for an answer. Buck heard Hilaina suck in her breath as she stepped closer to him. The Ute man, older than Buck, but not as old as the one who had first spoken, leapt off his horse and reached for a hank of Hilaina’s hair that had escaped her bun while she had been working. Hilaina jerked her head back, but he gripped it tight as he fingered the reddish-brown strands.

            “How much?”

Hilaina slapped at the man’s hands with both of hers and then, grabbing the hank with both her fists, jerked her hair free of his grasp.

            “I ain’t for sale!”

Buck reached over to push Hilaina behind him as he forced his body between her and the Ute. “She’s not for sale.”

Full of apprehension, Buck watched the Ute return to his horse for a bundle which he next spread on the ground in front of Buck. He nodded towards Hilaina.

            “How much?”

Hilaina grabbed the back of Buck’s coat and whispered a threat. “Buckley John Kramer, don’t you dare sell me to no Indian. I plumb ain’t going to stand for it, you hear me?”

Saturday Snippet: The Pretender, the Usurper

The  following is taken from my novel,
Diantha
Book 14 in the series,
The Widows of Wildcat Ridge

Diantha ignored the opening and closing of the door two more times as, with her back to those in her lobby and praying her trembling fingers did not betray her, she began to sort the mail alphabetically by last name into the pigeonholes of the mail case.
As soon as he had been granted the postmaster position, Eugene had commissioned the case and had it specially built in Salt Lake City. In addition to compartments that could hold letters sorted alphabetically as well as stamps other supplies, it was designed with a ledge on which to place the unsorted mail, and a drawer for additional supplies. Two doors opened like a cupboard for full access, but they could also be closed and locked for security. Diantha remembered his excitement when it had arrived on the train in Wildcat Ridge years before.
Diantha felt the tension inside her build as she heard the murmurs among those waiting for their mail. Although Mr. Cauley—the pretender, the usurper—did as she asked and said no more, his words spoken to the first group that came for their mail were already being spread. She listened as Mr. Cauley quietly deflected questions addressed to him, but it did not prevent people from speculating.

Saturday Snippet: I Do Wish to Settle This Today

The  following is taken from my novel,
Diantha
Book 14 in the series,
The Widows of Wildcat Ridge

Diantha twisted back to face the man. “Mr. Cauley, please! As I stated earlier, I would appreciate you refraining from saying anything until I have received official notification of any changes.”

Upset almost to the point of tears, Diantha set aside the manners she had been taught from the time she was a small girl to glare at the man standing next to the side wall which supported stairway leading to the upstairs rooms. She steeled herself to meet without flinching the angry expression on his face as his gaze bore into hers and he responded speaking in a tone she recognized as forced civility.

“Very well, Mrs. Ames. However, I do wish to settle this today.”

Diantha turned her attention back to sorting the letters that came in the mail that day. Unfortunately, she knew even if Mr. Cauley said no more, the damage had been done. In her peripheral vision, she caught sight of the three women, full of curiosity, and perhaps a touch of concern, look between her and the gentleman who now stood off to the side and watched her every move. She knew once she handed them what mail she found for them, they would be off to spread what they had heard to other townspeople.
