Saturday Snippet: What Are You Doing?

Today's Saturday Snippet is taken from
Virginia's Vocation
Book 19, Lockets & Lace series

           “Virginia. What are you doing?”
Startled at the sound of Jefferson’s voice, full of curiosity as he stood directly behind her, Virginia twitched and the nib of the pen slid across the back of the draft, leaving an inch-long streak. She turned to her brother, a snap in her voice. “I’m taking care of business. I’ll be with you in a minute, Brother. Please, don’t crowd me.”
“I think you need to tell me what is going on.”
Virginia glanced back to see her niece sitting on the bench in front by the bank window with her body twisted so the palms of her hands and her nose were pressed against the glass. “I think you need to tend to your daughter. We can discuss this later.”
Virginia turned back to the ledge to finish endorsing the draft. She sighed with relief when she heard Jefferson cross the room to remind Hannah of the proper way for a young lady to sit and wait in a public place. Avoiding the curious expression on the teller’s face, she ducked her head as she handed the signed draft and her bank passbook to the man. Then, to discourage questions or comments, she pursed her lips and avoided eye contact while he recorded her deposit.

His gray eyes that studied her conveyed no warmth. With a sinking feeling, Virginia forced a slight upturn of her lips and nodded a greeting. Until they were formally introduced, it would be impolite for her to initiate a conversation. However, he did not need to speak for her to know he did not welcome her presence.

Dear readers, this was me the first two weeks of April. I normally get advanced readers' copies of my book out to some of my fans. As part of two multi-author series', I published two books close together. That meant I needed to announce the releases and market both books close together. Then there was this little matter of preparing my income taxes for the year.

I received great support for those readers who read advance copies of Diantha. However, I did not manage to get advanced copies of Virginia's Vocation out. If you have read either book, especially Virginia's Vocation, I ask you to please leave a book review on Amazon, and, if possible, GoodReads. I greatly appreciate all Amazon book reviews.
