“True, but I do try to be a good example for my sister.” Varinia lifted her chin. He wished to call her Rina, like family and close friends did? However, if she allowed the familiarity, Betsy, who usually did not demonstrate a strong sense of propriety, would take it as permission to address him as Arnie, too. If there was one issue between her and her younger sister that increasingly annoyed Varinia, it was the tendency for Betsy—ever since the harvest dance—to stay glued by her side any time they happened across Arnold Dickens. It did not matter whether the occasion was at church, in town, or if the family had business with the livery, which provided the feed for their milk cow and team of horses. As much as Betsy resisted such social strictures for herself, when it came to Varinia and Arnold, Betsy claimed she only wished to serve as a chaperone. However, considering her age, Varinia did not see the need for being supervised—certainly not by someone only seventeen.
Mostly, Varinia noticed Arnold said nothing to provide any clues regarding whether or not he was in a position to marry within the next year or two.
