Saturday Snippet: There's Money Riding on the Answer

Charlie grumbled deep in his throat as he speared Albert with a glare. He returned his gaze to Dahlia. “Told Mr. Bainbridge I’d bring Nathan’s gear over to you. Been a spell since I drove a wagon, but that old mule and me got along just fine. Got the wrong house at first, but Aaron set me straight. Told me to come to the back.”

Dahlia held back a laugh. Halfway through the introductions, she already figured both of these men must be quite the characters.

Albert’s expression grew serious. “We feel powerful bad about what happened to Nathan, especially with a nice lady like you coming to marry him, and all. You mind if we step inside with his trunk and kit, maybe take a quick look at him?” He hesitated as he glanced at Charlie. “Plus, we got us a question we’d like to ask you. There’s money riding on the answer.”

Dahlia raised both eyebrows. Money riding on the answer?

Saturday Snippet: Discuss Options?

The following snippet is taken from
Nathan's Nurse
Book 19 in the series,
Sweethearts of Jubilee Springs

“Please give me about ten minutes to get things settled with my maid and some water for tea started. I’ll have her bring you down to my office so we can talk. Unfortunately, I received a disturbing telegram from Mr. Bainbridge of the Prosperity Mine this morning regarding an issue that has come up. In light of this new set of circumstances, we need to discuss your options.”
Discuss options? Dahlia felt her stomach tighten into a knot of apprehension. Feeling dazed, her gaze followed the bridal broker who, offering a forced smile as a flash of uncertainty crossed her brow, walked out of her room, and shut the door.
Dahlia stood in the middle of the floor and stared at the blank wall. She made the trip this far full of confidence in the decision she made to accept Nathan Price’s marriage proposal. She had felt sorry for Kate’s reduced circumstances, and perhaps a little smug. She had not been forced to leave everything of value behind for the rest of her family like Kate felt compelled to do. Instead, she wore new clothes for the journey bought with family money—her portion of her father’s inheritance. She left home with her basket filled with a day’s worth of food. The only money she spent from the funds she received from Mr. Price had been for the bread, cheese, and an apple she purchased earlier to get her through the day. If she had realized Kate was out of both food and money, she would have bought enough to feed her, too. She had felt self-assured and settled on the direction her life was now taking—until Lizett’s cryptic comment left her feeling unbalanced.
What new set of circumstances had arisen? What options did Lizett need to discuss with her?
Please, oh, please! Don’t tell me Mr. Price has decided he does not wish to marry me and wants to send me back.

Saturday Snippet: She Does Not Smoke a Corncob Pipe

The following snippet is taken from
Nathan's Nurse
Book 19 in the series,
Sweethearts of Jubilee Springs

As Nathan turned to go back to his bunk to read the latest letter, his skin began to tingle with the awareness that another person approached him from behind. He turned his head to see who attempted to look over his shoulder and sighed in resignation. Charlie. Again.
“Who’s it from, Nathan? Your lady who smokes the corncob pipe?”
“Stop it, Charlie. She does not smoke a corncob pipe.” Nathan shook his head as Charlie darted ahead until he stood in front of him and blocked his path. He grabbed one of Nathan’s wrists and pulled the envelope toward him. Swaying side-to-side, he inhaled deeply. Putting on a show of ecstasy, he smiled as he affected a swoon, tumbling to the floor.
“Ah! That stinks of some fine-smelling pipe tobacco, or my name’s not Charlie Brewster.” Moving less-than-gracefully, Charlie once again stood and eyed Nathan with a raised eyebrow. “You sure Miss Tobaccy don’t smoke a pipe? Although, more I think on it, if she can afford quality tobaccy like that, she’s probably smoking something a little fancier than a corncob. Figure they make ladies’ pipes? If so, you’ll have to tell Brinks so they can order some in for her.”
As he pushed past Charlie, Nathan rolled his eyes. “I’m not asking Brinks to order in a selection of pipes suitable for a woman….
