Saturday Snippet: It Stinks in Here

Today's Saturday Snippet is taken from

Sabrina

Rescue Me (Mail-order Brides), Book 19

 by Zina Abbott

The sheriff slammed the metal door with crosshatches made of steel over the foot square glazed opening.

“In here, Ce-Ce, with our backs to the wall so they can’t see us. Hopefully, we will still be able to hear.” She closed her eyes and felt her heart sink as she heard the key grate in the lock. After all the stunts she had pulled in Dayton that had held the potential to get her in trouble with the law, it was here in Burney-nowhere-Colorado she had to allow herself to be locked in a jail.

“It stinks in here.” Cecilia wrinkled her nose.

“I know. It smells like some drunk puked all over the place. But, Ce-Ce? The sheriff just unlocked the front door. I think Mr. Foster and his lapdog are walking inside now. We need to forget about the odor and stay quiet so we can hear.” Sabrina closed her eyes and more firmly pressed her back against the wall as she turned her head and listened to raised voices in the main office.

Phrases like, “I paid for them, and I expect to get what I paid for,” and “We don’t condone white slavery in Burney,” and “We always treat our girls well,” and “There was a signed contract,” delivered in loud, argumentative voices peppered the air in the room next door.

Her eyes closed while she listened, under her breath, Sabrina cursed both Riley Foster and Ivy Snider in turn. How dare they try to control her life? More to the point, how dare they put her sister at risk? As soon as the building grew silent, her eyes popped open. Straining to hear anything that might be spoken in whispered tones, she turned her head and pressed an ear against the wall.

“Keep them on that side of the room, Martin. I need to find out first what she knows.”

Sabrina recognized the sheriff’s voice. She moved away from the wall and walked toward the opening to the cell. Grabbing the frame to the barred gate that secured prisoners inside, she stood in the opening so she faced the center walkway. I will not talk to the sheriff through jailhouse bars. However, in case someone she did not wish to see entered with him, she prepared to slam the gate shut. It should slow them long enough for her to reach for her knife.
