Saturday Snippet: His Kiss Captivated Her

The following snippet is taken from
Hannah's Handkerchief
Book 24 in the series
Lockets & Lace

Hannah had noted the differences in the various male lips she had kissed that night. Some were hard, stiff, almost as if reluctant or shy. Others were damp and mushy. Many kisses were quite pleasant, far better than the kisses from the inexperienced Salina boys she had kissed.
A few times early on she had shuddered as she watched a man standing before her lick his lips as he prepared for the kiss. The husband of the chaperone pair each time had ordered the man, on pain of spending the rest of the night in the stockade if he didn’t, to wipe his face with a clean handkerchief first. The word must have spread back through the line, for after the third attempt, no one tried for a slobbery kiss.
However, when Hannah’s lips met those of Jake Burdock’s she immediately recognized his kiss differed from all the others. The warmth and tenderness of his kiss captivated her like none other that evening. She closed her eyes in order to focus on the sensation, continuing to lean forward in order to delay the end of the kiss. Her female chaperone cleared her throat. Hannah recognized it as a gentle prompt to end the kiss.

Saturday Snippet: She Saw Her Chance

The following snippet is taken from
Hannah's Handkerchief
Book 24 in the series
Lockets & Lace

Hannah saw her chance. She turned to her cousin with a calculating look that warned she might be the perfect daughter and the perfect sister, but she had no intention of being the perfect cousin—at least not that night. “It is for a good cause, Kizzie. I think it will be all right as long as they make sure the men behave, don’t you?”
“Please, girls. I’m sure you’ve kissed a sweetheart behind a tree after church or school classes. This will be even more chaste than that.”
Hannah had kissed a couple of boys when no one was around, but she doubted her cousin had. Would Kizzie admit to it publicly like this?
Hannah smiled at the moment she knew the woman had won her cousin over.
“You’re right, Hannah. It’s for a good cause, so we’ll go along with Mrs. Prescott’s plan as long as these men behave themselves.”

The book description for Hannah's Handkerchief has been revised since it orignally went on preorder. Here it is:

With her blonde hair and blue eyes, Hannah Atwell, a Kansas farmer’s daughter, knows she is pretty—and she enjoys pretty things. She spent her life striving to be the perfect, obedient daughter. She feels she is destined for something more than being a farmer’s wife living in a soddie.

While at a party held at Fort Riley, Kansas, to celebrate the end of the Civil War, Hannah begins to question if always doing what she is told is to her advantage. The special event, complete with dancing with handsome young officers and a chaste kissing fundraiser for the Sanitary Commission, opens Hannah’s eyes to possibilities for her life as surely as Lieutenant Jake Burdock captures her heart. She impulsively offers him her handkerchief as a token of her regard. Missed connections, parents who constantly warn against military men, and dealing with those close to her who have suffered combat injuries conspire to drive her away from Jake. Only the letters they exchange seem to keep them connected.

Not long after the dance, Jake, who works under Captain Prescott, the quartermaster at Fort Riley, is assigned to duty at the frontier forts in western Kansas. There, many of the living quarters are more primitive than a Kansas soddie. Supplying the uniforms, supplies, horses and mules the soldiers need is challenging at best. In spite of the hardships involved, the Army is Jake’s chosen career. His life constantly at risk, must he sacrifice his chance to share his life with the young woman who had won his heart?
