In his peripheral vision, Ollie caught sight of his lawyer friend, Harry Bradford, who stood watching them with rapt attention. Judging from the frown on Harry’s face, he guessed that Harry considered this woman far too good to be talking to the likes of Ollie Thompson. Friend or not, Harry was probably preparing to step in, should Ollie make a perceived wrong move towards her.
Ollie felt a jab of resentment at the attitude of the cow town lawyer, even though he knew Harry Bradford was right. She was too good for him, even if she interested him, which she did not. On the other hand, Bradford came from the East, the same as this woman. They probably used to run in the same social circles.
Well, fine. Let Bradford help her. That way, Ollie could skedaddle and get free of this woman. It would serve Bradford right to get stuck being a nursemaid to this fanciful female. She didn’t have the sense to realize she had no business turning up by herself in a town like Abilene, unless she planned to set herself up whoring in one of the houses east of the school. “Ma’am, I reckon you might need to look past Abilene. As a deputy marshal, I don’t cover nothing but right here.” He waved Harry Bradford over. “Let me fix you up with just the man who can help you. He’s a lawyer from back East, plus, he sometimes hunts folks down.” Ollie considered it bounty hunter work, but he decided against telling her that. “He can follow after your brother for you.”
