Saturday Snippet: You'll Be Staring Down Some Papa's Shotgun Barrel

The following snippet was taken from

Pearl

Prairie Roses Collection series, Book 16

by Zina Abbott

“Now, that dark-haired female, there, is one fine-looking woman! I might not consider it such a trial to travel with a wagon train if it means getting to know someone like that.” Jeremy, his voice full of enthusiasm, nodded.

“You mean the one with the brown-and-red-plaid dress and yellow sunbonnet hanging down her back? She’s too old for you, Jer. I can see that from here.” Will snorted and shook his head.

Michael brought his gaze back to the lovely brunette. “He’s right, Jeremy. She’s several years older than you.” She’s not too old for me. Too bad she’s married.

“On the other hand, that cute, thin gal with the blonde hair and white apron over her blue skirt, I could see myself spending some time with her.” Will grinned as he nodded toward the wagon with the man reading the Bible and the wife tending a Dutch oven. “Her sister is cute, too, but too young.”

“They’re both too young, not even out of short skirts.” Michael huffed as his gaze wandered toward the two sisters, the second a year or two younger than the one wearing blue. She was also blonde but wore a yellow calico dress beneath her apron. I don’t envy that father having to protect those young girls from the Wills and Jeremys of this world. “You better leave girls like those two alone, or you’ll be staring down some papa’s shotgun barrel.”

Saturday Snippet: You Personally Know the Judge?

The following snippet was taken from

Indianapolis Justice

Gamble on Judgment series, Book 2

by Zina Abbott

“I’m afraid, from what I just overheard, such is not the case.” Stella glanced toward Detective Duggan. “While my brother is here, I still choose to retain Mr. Bradford to assure my brother’s safety and well-being…for as long as there appears to be a need.”

“Detective Duggan, here, expressed his eagerness to dispense his own brand of back alley justice.” Harry glanced at Duggan before returning his gaze to Captain Jeffries.

Jeffries glanced at Detective Duggan and then cleared his throat as he grabbed one hand with the other behind his back and rocked on his heels. “Surely, you are exaggerating, Mr. Bradford. There are no White Hats or other vigilante groups in Indianapolis. Mr. Duggan is one of my best men. He has no need to resort to—”

“He-he was preparing to punch my brother in the face with his fist, Captain. I-I saw it as I walked in.” Stella turned her gaze to the floor as a brief shudder coursed through her. She raised her gaze to meet that of the police captain. “I do believe it is necessary I retain Mr. Bradford to see to the safety of my brother, sir…at least, for the time being.”

“I was on my way to the Post Office building to visit the Honorable Emmett Carlton in his upstairs chambers.” Harry cleared his throat. “Also, I will make arrangements to bring in a physician daily to assure there are no bruises, cuts, or indications of injury on any part of Mr. Schoenfeld’s body, including those where a man can be beaten without visible signs.”

“You personally know Judge Carlton?” the chief asked carefully, his eyes narrowing to slits. He shifted his gaze from one side to the other.

“Yes, sir. Emmett Carlton and I go way back.”
