Saturday Snippet: One Never Knew

          Even though Avery had been hired as a new professor of English literature and grammar at Oberlin College, he had not been able to save much from his previous job instructing rowdy boys at the all-male secondary seminary. Feeling more like a disciplinarian than a teacher while he was there, he happily resigned from that job when offered the position at the college. Of course, Oberlin was not his first choice of colleges to work for since it accepted female students—a waste of instructional time as far as he was concerned—but he treated it like a stepping stone in the right direction. His Presbyterian minister from home in Indiana had been instrumental in providing him with a glowing reference to this institution which had been established by two Presbyterian ministers in the 1830s.

          Raking his fingers through his brown hair he recently cut short, Avery wondered if the other upstairs rooms were decorated in a similar fashion. It would make sense, since Mrs. Drusilla Chilton, his mid-fifties landlady, made it clear all upstairs rooms housed male boarders. Which begged the question in Avery’s mind—did she take in female boarders? He hoped not, but one never knew.

          By this point, Meadowlark had guessed of whom they spoke. She fought down the surge of excitement that rose within her and spoke in a disinterested tone. “Who has come?

          The trio of women turned to face her. A wide smile split the face of Chases Quail.

          Her eyes full of merriment, Chases Quail answered for the group. “We speak of your childhood friend, Gray Squirrel. You do recall him, do you not, Sings-like-meadowlark? He has come for an extended visit with his uncle. Even now, he spends time with his cousin, Eyes-like-hawk, increasing his skills so he is better prepared for the buffalo hunt.”

Saturday Snippet: He Dropped the Barrel

The following snippet is from my book, 

Millwright's Daughter

            Kit’s focus remained on Joseph Wells who now stood, his arms akimbo, as the man glared at him. He dropped the barrel into the wagon back and walked it in place to ride solidly along with the rest of his load.”

            “I’m not paying you to talk to my niece.”

            Kit refused to let the bully of a millwright ruffle his confidence. He turned to Joseph with a smile. “No, you’re paying me to take a wagonload of eighty barrels of wheat and corn flour to the railyard in Oak Hill to go out on this evening’s train. Even with stopping partway to rest the mules and get something to eat after I get across the covered bridge, I’ll arrive there in plenty of time.”
