Some days were worse than others, but he’d die before he admitted it to anyone. Pushing his personal misery aside, he joined Ross as she worked on Flintlock’s hooves. Done found a knife on her own. He had never seen the old gelding take to a rider the way he did to Ross.

          Elam turned as Henry joined him. They stood together in silence as they watched Ross finish up. Once she stood, he reached forward and took the rope strung through the halter. “I’ll take him on back to his stall, Mr. Welsh. You done give these horses a right fine treat today.” When she smiled in response, Elam glanced at Henry. Don’t you see it, Henry, smiling like that, how much she looks like a woman?

              “Miss Atwell, I hope to stop by your home on my way back to Fort Riley, unless Capt. Prescott assigns me to go with the men from the Salina Stockade on to Fort Ellsworth. If it is agreeable, when I’m in the area, I would like to visit with you again. If not, might I ask you to correspond with me when your time allows?”

              Hannah’s heart soared. He does still wish to see me again, even after all I said. Keeping her gaze lowered, she turned her face toward him. “Yes, to both, Lieutenant. Do you wish me to direct my letters to Fort Riley or someplace else?”

              Jake leaned over and spoke directly into her ear. “Fort Riley will do. They’ll forward my correspondence.” He straightened and nodded as his gaze met that of Hannah’s father.

Although most of my covers are created by one of several talented cover artists, this cover is my own creation. I have been working on it over the course of several years, including adding the series logo just yesterday.

 

I originally wrote this book in 2014, but for several reasons, never published. I will be putting it up on pre-order next week. Please look for it.
