Saturday Snippet: What Are You Trying to Pull

The  following is taken from my novel,
Diantha
Book 14 in the series,
The Widows of Wildcat Ridge

“One of the men killed was the postmaster. He wasn’t a miner, but took part in the rescue attempt that ended up claiming the lives of a lot of merchants and businessmen in town. With enough people still there to justify a post office, and the position now open, the government is looking for someone who is willing to move to such a remote location to fill it. Since it is a small office without mail delivery every day with only a small monthly salary, it means you would need to live frugally on the salary provided. I…” Louis glanced across the table at his wife. “…we thought it would be a good opportunity for you since you do not seem to wish a future in the brick business.”
Hank fought down the surge of excitement welling up within him. This position held great possibilities. It would bring in a steady source of income—money over which he had complete control—for a job that would leave him enough freedom to pursue his own desired career. He could find a small retail space and once again open his shop starting with the left-over inventory he had crated up and stacked in both his room and a back wall of a storeroom at the brickyard. If the post office building was big enough, he could sell his inventory from there. Most importantly, he would have time to work on his novel he had almost completed before he had been forced out of his shop and into a job working for his brother.
A quick glance at the smirk of satisfaction on Della’s face told him she was the mastermind behind him being offered a position far away from Salt Lake City—far away from the business she wanted to eventually go to her son, Louis Junior, rather than to Hank. For once, he felt grateful he had not indulged in his usual hair-trigger tendency to act—often over-react—to a situation. It would never do to let Della know he welcomed the prospect.
Hank slammed his open palm on the table next to his plate and, with a scowl on his face, half rose from his chair. “What are you trying to pull here, Louis? Forcing me out of Salt Lake City and away from our family? What on earth makes you think I’d be willing to move to—where did you say this place it? Wildcat Ridge? What kind of a name for a town is that?”

Saturday Snippet: In the Flesh

The  following is taken from my novel,
Diantha
Book 14 in the series,
The Widows of Wildcat Ridge

Upon hearing the next sound that filled the air, Hilaina stopped in her tracks, frozen in place as she listened. A man whistled. The tune sounded like the one Buck used to whistle at her when she started talking too much. He’d tease her into silence by softly whistling the very tune she heard now. Only, it could not be Buck. He worked on a big ranch in northern Colorado, miles away from Wildcat Ridge.
Unable to restrain her curiosity any longer, Hilaina stepped around the wagon until she saw the back of a man clad in denim work clothes squatting on the ground while he hammered at wide rough-cut boards to attach them to a wooden frame. It appeared he was building a large wooden box or bin. She slowly approached as she studied him. He seemed to have the same build as Buck, and wore the same hat. Dare she hope?
The man, wearing the hint of a grin, stood and faced her. For one of the few times in her life, Hilaina found herself speechless. The man who had filled her thoughts the past two and a half months, the man she dreamed about every night, the man she longed for with every ounce of her being stood before her. She swallowed and found her voice. “Buckley John Kramer, that really you?”
She watched his grin widen and a teasing light fill his eyes. “In the flesh, Hilaina Dowd.”

Both Nissa and Diantha are stand-alone novels. However, they also can be read like a duet--a two book mini-series within a series. Please CLICK HERE to find the book description and purchase link for Nissa
