Saturday Snippet: A Jacket to Keep You Warm

This week's Saturday Snippet is taken from
Escape from Gold Mountain
by Zina Abbott

Canton, China ~ March, 1880

Ling Loi entered her mother’s room and bowed in respect. Holding a bowl of tea with both hands, she sank to her knees and carefully placed the hot beverage on a short table next to the older woman. Her eyes followed the final stitches her mother used to fasten an extra layer of heavy black cotton cloth to the inside back lining of a new garment. “Honored Mother, what is it you are sewing?"
Loi watched as her mother’s eyes, full of sorrow, lifted to gaze at her. “I hear the weather is colder in Gum Saan (Gold Mountain or California), than it is here. This is a jacket to keep you warm. You will not have a dowry, but at least when you join your husband, you will bring with you adequate clothing.”
Loi dropped her gaze and studied the mat-covered floor. “It is true, then, Heng still plans to send me across the ocean to a husband in America? He cannot find someone local for me?”

Escape from Gold Mountain will initially be offered on more than one vendor. The release day is scheduled for September 4, 2019. It is currently on a pre-order sale on both Amazon and Barnes & Noble. Saturday Snippet: Why, Oh Why

The following snippet comes from
Nissa
Book 3 in the series,
The Widows of Wildcat Ridge

“We’ll turn and go back now.” Dallin shifted a drowsy Molly to his other arm, moved to the outside of the boardwalk and told Jamie to walk on the other side of his mother.
“Why’d we do that? Why didn’t we just turn around where we were?”
“Because, Jamie, it’s polite for a gentleman to walk on the outside of a walkway so a woman’s skirt doesn’t get splashed by mud or dust if a wagon or horse travels too close to the boardwalk.” Dallin leaned forward and smiled at Jamie. “I’m no expert on how to be a gentleman, but my mother taught me that much.”
“I think you have done a fine job of being a gentleman, Dallin. I appreciate your example and what you are teaching my son.”
Nissa looked over to find Dallin’s gaze locked on hers. They walked in that manner for several steps.
Nissa faced forward, fighting back tears.
Why, oh why could not James have been a father like this? Why couldn’t Dallin have been Jamie’s father?

For the first time ever, Nissa  is on sale for a short time.

Saturday Snippet: Just Want You to Be in Practice

This week's snippet is taken from
Aaron's Annulment Bride
one of three novellas in my collection,
Zina Abbott's Independent Day 1881 from the series,
Sweethearts of Jubilee Springs

“Aaron Brinks, didn’t you forget something?”
Aaron stopped in his tracks and retraced his steps back up the top three stairs to his parents’ home above the mercantile. His hands on his hips, he stood next to his mother who was cooking an egg over easy for this father. He leaned over to look in her face. “I don’t want to be late at the mine, Ma. What do you think I forgot?”
Desdemona Brinks, known to family and friends as Desi, looked up at him and smiled. After a second of silence, she spoke sweetly. “Did you get enough to eat, dear? It’s a long work day for you, and I wouldn’t want you to start out hungry.”
“Yes, Ma. Breakfast was wonderful, as usual. I thought I thanked you for breakfast, but in case I forgot, thank you again. And thank you for packing my lunch. Was there anything else?”
Desi continued to smile at her son.
Aaron sighed, then leaned over and kissed his mother on the cheek. “Sometimes, Ma, I think you treat me more like I’m nine instead of twenty-nine. Satisfied?”
Just want you to be in practice to treat your new bride right. Every young bride appreciates a husband who kisses her and thanks her for the hearty breakfast and good lunch she’s packed for him before he leaves every morning.”
Aaron eyed his mother suspiciously. “And what makes you think there will be a young bride?”
