Cover Reveal: MAIL ORDER LORENA and MAIL ORDER PENELOPE

Below, I am happy to share my covers for the next two of three 
Widows, Brides & Secret Babies books to be published as follows:

Be aware, if you receive my newsletter, you might have seen my original cover for Mail Order Lorena which, originally, I ordered for Penelope. Then, I wrote a few filler paragraphs in Mail Order Roslyn to complete a scene and provide a possible solution to a situation. It involved a character named Lorena who had no active role in that book. 
I could not get Lorena out of my mind. Within a week of my "off the top of my head" inclusion of her name and possible role in my first book in this series, I decide she needed her own story.
Next, I liked the model I originally used for Penelope better for Lorena, especially after I went through my collection of cover models I purchased for covers and found the perfect image, complete with the half-mourning gown, for Penelope.
Thankfully, the cover artist for this series, Virginia McKevitt, was very accommodating. She did a name change on one cover, and created a new one.

Saturday Snippet: He Felt Centipedes Crawl Up His Skin

The following snippet is taken from

          When he turned to get a good look at the young man in the light shining through the door, he began to feel centipedes crawl up his skin. Ross had a faint layer of dirt on his face, as if using it to mimic the beginnings of facial hair. That caused the dirt smell he detected. Then Ross turned to face him. Elam took in the scraggly fringe of light reddish hair, the greenish-gray eyes barely peeking from beneath the brim of the battered slouch hat, and the fine bones of a face that had not thickened and broadened with maturity.

          Elam’s step halted, which threw him off-balance and threatened to send him tumbling to the ground. The realization hit him like a cannonball, the likes of which had killed many of his comrades during the war. What was off about Ross, was, he was not a young man. Elam was looking at a woman dressed like a young man.

          His heart pounding in his chest, Elam turned to face forward. During his time in the Army, he had heard of cases where women passed themselves off as men to fight in the war. Some followed their husbands into battle rather than endure separation. Others did so out of patriotic duty. Many were not discovered until after they died and were prepared for burial, or unless they became ill or injured and their gender was discovered while in a hospital. What he could not understand was, why did this woman try to pass herself off as male?

          The answer came to him immediately. There were many things men could do that were not considered proper for women to do. She wanted to be around the horses. She wanted to ride astride. She offered to curry the horses and muck stalls—all things women might do on family property but not in a public place such as a town livery.

About Mail Order Roslyn: 

          Roslyn Welsh is sent by stagecoach to Junction City to marry a man with whom her aunt and guardian, without Roslyn’s knowledge, had been corresponding. His requirements for a wife were that she must be twenty-one years of age with a family Bible for proof, and she must have no children. Only, Roslyn is not quite twenty-one, she has a baby, and her aunt has no intention of sending the family Bible with her. The marriage prospect turns into a disaster. Stuck in a strange town with no money, she is told there is no work for a decent woman with a baby. To allow herself time to figure what to do with her future, Roslyn accepts an offer to ride the stagecoach to the Ellsworth B.O.D. Stagecoach station to help the stationmaster’s wife.

          Elam Stewart survived the American Civil War, but his left leg from above the knee down did not. With no home to return to and realizing there are very few people willing to hire a man with only one good leg, he’s convinced he has no future. While working as a day laborer in the local livery, he becomes intrigued by a visitor named Ross who is anxious to spend time with the horses, especially once Elam discovers Ross’s secret. Then he learns where Ross intends to seek work. Even though he does not have a future, he does have a Spencer repeating rifle. He can have a purpose.

          Roslyn and Elam ride the same stagecoach to the Ellsworth Station on the Kansas frontier. Between resentments among the stock tenders, difficulties with animals that pass through the station, and the threat of attacks by the Cheyenne Native Americans, is there a future for Roslyn and Elam at the station? Or will their future take them on another stagecoach ride away from Ellsworth?
