“You didn’t say anything about love.” Hoping the horse would stay on the road and not turn off onto someone’s property, Joshua sat with twisted neck so he could see Rose’s face as well as hear her words. He wondered if there was a chance she ever could love him.

“Of course, I would prefer a husband who loves me, and who is someone I can love.” Rose glanced at Joshua out of the corner of her eye. “That’s something you can encourage, but not force. And, when dealing with men, it sometimes seems hard for a woman to figure out where she stands or what she should do. Some men are self-serving and only wish to take advantage of a woman. Others, their pride gets in the way.”

“What do you think is the case with me, Rose?” Joshua felt his entire body tense as he waited for the answer.
