Eva stepped closer to Owen and offered him an encouraging smile. “Aggie and I discussed this. She offered me the use of her kitchen to fix a Sunday dinner for the three of us. I already have everything I need to make a meat and vegetable pie and a dried apple crisp.”

Owen leaned toward Eva. “Oh. That sounds fine—wonderful, in fact. Thank you.”

“It will give you an opportunity to judge my cooking skills. I assume that is important to you.”

Owen leaned back a few inches and allowed a sigh to escape. “I must have given you a terrible impression of what I hoped for in a marriage. After we started writing, I began to see I couldn’t pigeon-hole you into a collection of jobs I need help with. It’s just that my first marriage…” He grimaced and turned away.

Eva stared at the ground. “In one of Aggie’s letters to me, she briefly mentioned the difficulties with your first marriage. It was also her hope that, if we married, we would be more suitable for each other.”

He sucked in a deep breath. Trust Aunt Aggie to say something. “I know it’s not fair to assume a marriage with you would be the same as my first one.” He took her left hand hooked on his arm in his left hand and wrapped his right arm around the back of her waist. Will she step away? He felt a sense of relief and gratification that she did not pull away. “I find I am quite drawn to you, Eva.”
