Loving Lila
Thanksgiving Brides, Book 1
by Zina Abbott
Lila sucked in a breath. “Look, David. There’s a headstone for Papa now. At the time the will was read, Mr. Spencer mentioned provisions had already been made to order it carved and installed.” She walked up and read the inscription: “Loving husband and father. Wellborn Wallace Cleod. 1829-1882.” Lila found it fitting. Not only had he shown love to Nelda, in spite of her tendencies, but he had also loved her mother. As far as being a father, although he had become a busy man in his later years, she knew he loved both her, as well as her brother. Fighting back tears, she stooped and gently placed the bouquet of white and lavender flowers tied with the snippet of ribbon at the base of the granite memorial. I still miss you, Papa.
Lila stood and turned to David. “I wish I had a camera and knew how to use it. I so wish I could take a photograph of Papa’s headstone. Professor Sewell’s friend has one. He took photographs of the solar eclipse.” She brought her fingertips to her lips. I’m chattering.
“Perhaps we can come back in the summer and hire a photographer to bring his equipment here. He could take a photograph of the headstone alone, or maybe with you standing next to it.” David stepped closer to Lila and put his arm around her shoulders.
“That is a good idea.” Lila nodded. Without thinking she automatically snuggled closer until her shoulder rested near David’s armpit and their sides touched.
“At the very least, we’ll remember to bring some large sheets of paper and some pencils next time. We can do some rubbings.”
“Yes, I would like that.” Lila turned her head to gaze at David. She realized he already faced her. Her lips parted, and her chin lifted.
David’s lips eased closer to Lila’s.
Lila jerked her head to face forward and swallowed. I want to kiss him. But…but… She squeezed her eyes shut. This is Papa’s grave. What would he think? Breathing heavily, Lila turned her head to face David once more. “Thank you so much for bringing me, David. I don’t want us to be stuck trying to find our way back in the dark, especially if the weather turns. Perhaps we should leave.”
“You’re right.” David dropped his arm from Lila’s shoulder and grasped her hand. He gave it a quick squeeze. “I’ll step back a minute so you can say goodbye.”
“No, stay here.” Lila tightened her fingers around David’s hand. “Papa won’t mind.” You don’t mind, do you, Papa? I care for this man. I hope you approve. She again turned to face the headstone. Her eyeballs moved as she read the inscription twice more. “I’m ready, David.” She offered a smile as she glanced at him before turning her gaze toward the buggy.
