After waiting for the proprietor—whom he assumed also filled the role of postmaster—to finish waiting on a customer, Rand stepped forward. “I have a letter to mail to New York.”
The postmaster held it with both hands. “To Miss Ellen Benning, huh? You one of them bone-diggers out on Como Bluff? Most folks come this way aren’t so good at writing.”
“Sir, if you would just mail my letter without announcing to everyone in the store who it’s addressed to, I’d appreciate it. Two cents, am I correct?” Gritting his teeth, Rand reached into his pants pocket and pulled out two pennies.
“Sir, I’m Miss Ellen Benning. I’ll take the letter.”
The woman in the blue gown Rand had seen earlier stepped up to the counter and held out her hand.
Rand choked out a cough as he stepped back a quarter turn and stared down at the woman. This brazen hussy thought she could waltz up to the counter and claim a letter he was mailing to Ellie in New York? The audacity! “Excuse me, miss, but I would appreciate it if you did not interfere with my business. This is my letter I wish to mail.”
“But you are sending it to Ellen Benning in Schenectady, New York, are you not?” The woman turned to face Rand, her gaze meeting his. “Are you Dr. Randall Poechet? You could be. I’ve never seen a photograph of you, but you match the description given to me by Mr. and Mrs. Morgan. Tall. Slender. Dark hair and eyes. Clean-shaven. Well, you probably were before you went out to your dig site.”
