“No, Hilde. It is not safe for a young woman to travel by herself. It would not be right for you to walk or ride alone around town. You cannot travel on the train so far by yourself.” Marie bounded out of her seat and crossed the room. She grabbed Brunhilde’s shoulders, as if planning to forcefully hold her in place. “It is not a good idea, especially if Gustav lives close to this-this untamed land where these-these native peoples live.”

“Please sit, Marie. You raised an important concern. If you will allow me to finish, please…” Friedrich rubbed his forehead with his fingers.

“It will be all right, Tante Marie. Please, let Onkel Friedrich speak.” As she slowly twisted her shoulders to encourage Marie to loosen her grip, Brunhilde smiled and spoke softly, “Please, sit down again.”

Blinking, Marie released Brunhilde. She slowly stepped back and again sat next to a scowling Ernst.

“Marie is right; it would not be proper or safe for Hilde to travel alone.” Friedrich dropped his hand to the arm of his chair as he again turned his gaze to the others in the room. “The problem is not the Indians; it is the obnoxious, English-speaking American men. There is no shortage of them riding the trains and loitering around rail stations, especially the farther west one travels. That is where the other part of my plan comes in.” He paused. “It involves you, Carl.” He turned his gaze to his youngest son.

…Lila closed her eyes as she sighed. “I almost wish I left on the train today, instead of waiting until Monday.”

“If it’s been that bad, why didn’t you?” Without thinking, David reached a hand toward her. Realizing both her hands were holding clothing, he dropped it to his side.

“You did say you planned to come by, if you were able.” Lila, her head down, quickly glanced at David before dropping her gaze once more. “I didn’t want you to have to go to all the trouble of coming here only to find yourself dealing with Nelda and her disagreeable disposition.”

“I could have handled it.”

“Perhaps. However, I wanted to see…um, how are the children? Are they happy to be home once more?”

David wondered if she started to say something different than to inquire about his siblings. Is there a chance she wished to see me again? “I believe so. They were happy to see Ma. Then Pa came home just as they were getting into bed, and they were over the moon. The next morning, I left with Pa for the jobsite, so I suppose they are still happy to be back.”
