Marigold
Christmas Quilt Brides, Book 2
by Zina Abbott
“Do you recall me telling you about Joey, the little boy in my class I usually take a sandwich to? He no longer wears the jacket he wore last winter, and he has since completely outgrown it. I know Rose can help me cut out a pattern so I can make another one for him.” Marigold watched George’s face in an effort to gauge from his expression what he thought.
“Shouldn’t his parents worry about providing his clothes?” George scrunched his forehead into a frown.
“They should.” Marigold held her voice steady as she pressed her lips together tightly and dipped her chin. “Unfortunately, the boy’s stepfather has deserted the family, and the mother is very ill. I suspect consumption. She is barely able to make him something to eat at night. From what Joey says, her food supplies are limited, and I gather she has no way to replenish them. I…um…plan to rent a buggy and go out to his house tomorrow to see how bad the situation really is.”
“Mari, you cannot take on all the ills of your students who are in trouble. Trying to do so will eat you alive.” Placing a palm on her shoulder, George hunched so he could look Marigold straight in the face.
“You make a good point.” Jerking her head to the side, Marigold licked her lips. “But I have never run into a situation like this.” She lifted her gaze and met his. “In Cutler, the people in town were more close-knit. They had known each other for years, some for generations. If someone was in trouble, there was always extended family or the church to step in to help. It’s not like that here. People have come from all over the country, and the community ties are just not there. True, we go to church, but many citizens of New Ponca have no church affiliation. They have no one they can count on to turn to.” She shook her head.
“Still, Mari, you need to be careful.” George dropped his hand to his side.
