Christmas Quilt Brides, Book 2
by Zina Abbott
The two brothers returned across the footbridge to the Burdock homestead.
“So, you’re willing to consider working for the dragon lady?” Daniel chuckled as the two walked toward his sod house. “I hope you know what you’d be getting into.”
“I’ll consider it. She can’t be worse than fighting Apaches.” George scratched his eyebrow. “Must be nice to have the money to build not one, but two, wooden houses. I noticed right off the Kents have a nice wooden house.” He kept his face forward.
“From what I understand, the sisters came into a little bit of an inheritance. Rose insisted on the wooden house right away because of her sewing machine. She worried a sod house would create too much dirt in the air that might ruin it. She uses it for a home business she plans to build. The inheritance is also how she managed to buy the horse and buggy. All that was arranged before she and Joshua married.”
“That was smart on her part, I suppose. Spend the money on what she wants while it is still hers.” George was uncertain how the laws in Oklahoma Territory worked as far as women’s rights. He knew that in most states, once a couple married, the wife’s wealth came under the husband’s control.
“Joshua’s not like that. He prefers to make his own way, not rely on his wife’s money. My guess is, he won’t object to her spending any money that might be left on what she wants, which will probably be something to help her sister.”
George raised his eyebrows. Unusual man.
“It sounds like Miss Calloway has sunk most of her money into the two houses. The way Rose described it, her sister has two adjoining residential lots. The small house she lives in now is on one lot and will eventually be used for a caretaker’s cottage. The big house is intended for the other lot. I always thought a two-story place with several bedrooms was an awful lot of house for a single woman. However, if she has been planning this private school all along, it makes sense.”
George kept his gaze forward as he nodded. A caretaker’s cottage, huh? He wondered if, along with picking up construction jobs, he would like to work as a caretaker. That way, he would have a decent place to live—one that was not a sod house like Daniel’s or an army barracks shared with a crowd of loud-mouthed, snoring, flatulent men who filled the room with cigar and pipe smoke.
