Mail Order Penelope
Widows, Brides and Secret Babies, Book 23
by Zina Abbott
Rather than peer through the window to assess what he would find inside, he jerked the door open and stepped forward. His gaze was drawn to a man sprawled across the forward-facing bench. Sitting on the center bench, Mrs. Humphrey bent over him and held a white cloth to his arm.
“You’ve got wounded in here? Move aside, Mrs. Humphry and let me take a look.” Marcus placed his foot on the metal rod that served as a step as he prepared to enter the coach. He quickly realized Mrs. Humphry had not moved one inch. He might as well have not spoken. The only indication she heard him was the ripple in her jaw muscles and the tightening of the skin around her eyes.
Without looking at him, Mrs. Humphry snapped out a response with what he recognized as an irritated tone. “Not now, Captain. I’m busy.”
In dead silence, Marcus clenched his back teeth and stared at her. So much for a hysterically crying woman crumpled on the floor. He was the surgeon. He was the expert. He was an officer and was accustomed to being obeyed. Yet, she dismissed him as irrelevant. Confounded woman.

My next book I will be writing for the series, Rescue Me (Mail-order Brides) is Book 8,
I so enjoyed writing a romance about a historical German immigrant character in Bee Sting Cake by Brunhilde, I chose to write another romance between a young woman from Hesse and a recently mustered out soldier whose great-grandfather was a Hessian soldier captured by George Washington and granted land in Pennsylvania with German-speaking Americans in exchange for agreeing to no longer fight against the Continental Army. He married a woman he sent for from Hesse, and his son married a German-speaking woman. Although he is a several-generations American, Kurt Neumann is familiar with Hesse and remembers some German from before his paternal grandparents died. So, when Elise Meyer needs rescuing, other newly-mustered out soldiers with Kurt, who call him by the nickname, "Dutchy", (Those idiot Americans never could get it right that it was Deutsch, with an "oi" sound instead of a short "u" sound.) tease him into picking up on her.
This story also allows me to refer to a well-known fairy tale/fable that originated in Hesse, but which the English have since stolen/borrowed and adapted to their culture.
