Saturday Snippet: She Found Train Tickets

Today's Saturday Snippet is taken from

Lauren

Rescue Me (Mail-order Brides), Book 2

 by Zina Abbott

“What’s in the letter, Lauren? To me, it felt a little thicker than usual. Is there any chance…?” A tightness around her eyes, Effie returned her gaze to Lauren....

“Let me see.” Blinking back tears, Lauren lifted the envelope and began to rip open the top. After she pulled out the letter and unfolded it, she sighed with relief. Inside she found train tickets and several paper dollar bills.

“Oh, Lauren, I’m so happy for you. Coin would have been better than greenbacks, but, at least, he sent travel money.” Grinning widely, Effie grasped both of Lauren’s forearms. “Well, I’ll miss you, but perhaps you can write.” She dropped her smile. “When do you plan to leave?”

“Let me see what he says.” Lauren slowly raised the page and turned to keep the sun out of her eyes. Her lips moved as she read the letter. “He says to send a telegram to tell him when I will arrive in Rawlins. He’ll come into town every Saturday, so try to plan it so I arrive that day of the week. I hope a telegram won’t cost too much.” Lauren folded the money and tickets inside the letter before inserting it in the envelope once more. “Here, Effie, stand next to me so that, between you and the back of the restaurant, I can put this inside my corset.” She grabbed her friend’s hand and pulled her to the side of the stairs so they could not be easily observed through any windows or the houses that faced the alley. She began to unbutton the top of her dress.

“You don’t wear your corset that tight while you work, do you? What if it slips out?” Effie scooted her body to shield Lauren’s actions.

“Tight enough. I’ll position it so it is as secure as possible. I don’t dare take a chance of putting it in my pocket. If I come across Arnold, and he hears paper rustling or feels something through my skirt…” Lauren shook her head. “I’ll try to go to my room and hide it as soon as I return to the boardinghouse.”

“When will you leave?” Once Lauren finished, Effie stepped back and turned to face her friend. “Do you even know the train schedule?”

Lauren looked off to the side as she shook her head. “Thankfully, it’s Arnold’s mother, not Arnold, who pays me, and this Friday is when I get my month’s pay. I’ll somehow convince her I need to run an errand and just leave. Since I don’t want to draw unwanted attention, I won’t be able to take much with me. I’ll have to wait at the train station until the time for departure and hope Arnold doesn’t think to look for me there.”

My next book I will be writing for the series, Rescue Me (Mail-order Brides) is Book 8,

Elise.

I enjoyed writing a romance about a historical German immigrant character in

Bee Sting Cake by Brunhilde

which is why I chose to write another romance between a young woman from Hesse and a recently mustered out soldier whose great-grandfather was a Hessian soldier captured by George Washington and granted land in Pennsylvania with German-speaking Americans in exchange for agreeing to no longer fight against the Continental Army. He married a woman he sent for from Hesse, and his son married a German-speaking woman. Although he is an American, Kurt Neumann is familiar with Hesse and remembers some German from before his paternal grandparents died. So, when Elise Meyer needs rescuing, Kurt must make a decision--help her or walk away.
