“What’s going on here? Will?”
Upon hearing Uncle Michael’s voice, Clara realized the faint pounding she earlier heard was not her heart beating, but the sound of Michael’s mule loping across the ground. Reluctantly, she began to pull away from Will.
“A big old rattler almost got Clara, Boss.” Will loosened his hold on Clara so she could step to the side. “Here, I’ll show you.” He walked to the dead snake and held the tail above shoulder height, allowing the weight of the body to straighten and display its length. “Meat for the stew pot. The rattles are mine, though. And the skin.” He lowered the tail long enough to count. “Eight buttons. Not too bad. I should get some bragging rights out of that.”
“You used the shovel, did you?” Michael dismounted the mule and walked over to inspect the snake.
“Yep. Didn’t figure you wanted me wasting ammunition. Not to mention, no sense in alerting every Shoshone between here and the Snake River we’re traveling with a small train.”
“You plan to eat the snake?” Clara grimaced as her gaze moved between Will and Michael.
“Meat’s meat, and right now, we can’t afford to be picky.” Will shrugged. “I’ll toss it in the wagon and take care of it when we stop.”
