Saturday Snippet: She Locked Me Out of My Own Office

Rescue Me (Mail-order Brides), Book 19

by Zina Abbott

Hugh turned and, after glancing behind him to assure himself Martin had the situation under control, he jogged after Cal. He had no idea where the mouthy redhead got the idea Burney’s sheriff quit. Maybe Cal asked him to come so he could try to convince her Cal really was the sheriff?

Cal hopped onto the boardwalk in front of the sheriff’s office and jail.

Hugh stepped next to the lawman.

Cal grabbed the door handle and jiggled it back and forth, to no avail. “They locked the door.” His forehead scrunched and lips twisted, Cal turned to face Hugh. “That woman locked me out of my own office. Can you believe that?”

“She’s a redhead. Yeah, I can believe it.” Hugh almost laughed at his friend’s tone of disbelief. If you have never been around redheaded women, you are about to get an education.

“Miss Duncan?” Cal beat on the door with the side of his fist. “Miss Duncan, this is Sheriff Calvin Jenson. Unlock the door, right now, and let me inside.”

“No! The sheriff quit months ago.”

Upon hearing the shouted refusal through the door, Cal’s brow creased. He glanced over at Hugh out of the corner of his eyes. “Where did she get a crazy idea like that?”

“She’s been dealing with letters written by Foster.”

“That rat” Cal mumbled under his breath. He raised his voice. “No, Miss Duncan, I did not quit. Please look at the window.” Cal reached inside his coat and pulled his badge off of his vest. Stretching across the front of Hugh, he smacked his palm cradling the metal shield against the glass. “You see that, Miss Duncan? Now, I know you’re upset. After finding out what kind of man you were sent to marry, you have every right to be. But I need you to unlock this door. My deputy is holding Mr. Riley and his cohort at bay for only five minutes. We need to talk.”

Several seconds later, Hugh heard the crossbar securing the jailhouse lift from its hooks.
