          Upon hearing his nemesis’s claim his business was legitimate, Hugh barely suppressed his snort. As far as he was concerned, nothing Riley Foster was involved in was legitimate. He watched as Freddie slowly shoved back the side of his jacket and tucked it behind his pistol, which hung low on his hip. Suspecting Cal just might need backup before this was all over, Hugh stayed in the street behind the stagecoach and next to the edge of the boardwalk. From there, he could keep a close eye on both Riley and Freddie. He saw the messenger reach to open the door, all the while wondering what kind of miscreants would step off the stage. Where is that deputy, Martin?

          Hugh’s eyes rounded as he watched a slender hand, followed by peacock-blue sleeve, slide into the messenger’s outstretched palm. A woman appeared, a gray shawl around her shoulders and a straw bonnet with a yellow ribbon and silk flowers that had seen better days on her head. She held a carpetbag—slightly frayed and showing signs of wear. His muscles tightened. A redhead. Did this town not already have enough redheaded women—many of them working in Riley Foster’s place? Legitimate business, indeed. Then again, the red hair on most of Riley’s girls came from a bottle. This woman, with her carrot-orange hair—almost too bright to fit the polite description of strawberry blonde—did not get her hair color out of a henna bottle.
