Aware Orson had just looked over his shoulder toward his table—no doubt observing Lauren Brower—Jeb felt his insides clench. His cheek muscles twitched when Orson returned his gaze to him.

          “I’ve never known you to go out of your way to involve yourself with those of the fairer sex, Jeb.” Orson eyed him speculatively before again studying the woman sitting at his table. “From what I can see, she’s quite attractive. I can’t say that I blame you.”

          “Don’t make too much of it, Orson.” Jeb cleared his throat. “I saw her standing alone on the platform after the Chicago and Rock Island Line train arrived. Because she looked lost, I offered to help her find her connection. Once we started talking, and I realized she might be down on her luck, I invited her to dine with me.”

          “I’ve never known you to take in stray dogs or waifs, either.” Orson narrowed his eyes.

          “First time for everything.” Jeb quirked up the side of his mouth. “Without knowing what I’ll find out west, who knows when I’ll have the chance to get this close to a pretty woman again?” He grew serious once more. “She’s a mail-order bride for some sheep rancher outside of Rawlins.” He briefly explained Lauren’s situation as he understood it. “Now she’s stuck in Omaha, she plans to look for a place to live and a job to earn enough for another ticket.”
