Today's Saturday Snippet is taken from
Sabrina
Rescue Me (Mail-order Brides), Book 19
by Zina Abbott
“No, you’re not going anywhere with him.” The sheriff gave her a single nod before focusing his gaze on the other man in the room. “How much do you wish to thwart Foster’s scheme?”
Sabrina followed the sheriff’s gaze. Who was this man, and why was he there? From the moment she first saw him, he had been like a shadow to the sheriff. Yet, she had heard nothing said to indicate he was a deputy. With brown hair that could stand the attention of a barber and a two or three day shadow on his face, he was not overly tall. However, his thick shoulders, barrel chest, and beefy appearance gave him the appearance of also being tall.
“You know how I feel about him. What do you have in mind?” The big man folded his arms.
“Open up, Sheriff. My business with Miss Duncan is not finished.” Riley Foster’s voice boomed through the door. “I paid good money to get her and her friend here, and I intend to get what I paid for.”
“Be right with you, Mr. Foster.” Cal turned toward the door and hollered.
Sabrina watched as the sheriff stepped toward the front window. She flinched when he slapped his palm against the glass.
“Get away from the window, Stigman,” the sheriff yelled before turning to face her and Cecilia. “Into the jail cells with you two,” he spoke softly. “I’ll only lock the outer door, but it will keep them from being able to reach you.”
“You’re putting us in jail?” Sabrina hissed. “They’re the ones you should lock up.”
“I’m not going to exactly lock you up. It’s called protective custody. I’ll let you out as soon as it is safe. Come.”
“Just go, Miss Duncan.”
Upon hearing the
big man speak, his annoyance obvious, Sabrina jerked her gaze his direction
once more. Who is he, and what gives him
the right to order me about? She sighed with resignation. As much as the
thought of her and Cecilia being treated like prisoners grated, a part of her
recognized the wisdom of the tactic. She clutched her sister’s hand, and the
two scurried across the floor.
