A Bride for Quentin
Mistaken Identity Mail Order Brides, Book 8
by Zina Abbott
“Welcome, Quentin. You aren’t the only diner seeking a little privacy tonight. Follow me. I have a small table back by the window looking toward the rear verandah and the river. Will that suit?”
Quentin’s gaze followed the direction of Jude’s pointing finger. He saw a foursome that included Royce Bainbridge, the Denver marriage broker, and the miner, Stanley Turner, dining two tables over. With her back to him sat the auburn-haired woman who came to be Mr. Turner’s bride. “That will be fine.” Realizing his voice choked on the words, he cleared his throat. Just glance at her face long enough to assure yourself it is not her. Deciding his course of action, Quentin inhaled deeply. Once he knew it was not her, he could eat his supper while he—not for the first time—mentally talked himself through a bout of grief over having lost her. By later that night—the next morning, at the latest—he would be fine. “Are you serving your steak and herbed potatoes tonight?”
“That and fish with potatoes. But I assume you prefer the steak.”
“You know I do.”
Jude laughed softly. He began to wend his way through the tables. He traveled so that they approached the table with the foursome.
As he and Jude walked toward the table in the corner next to the window opening to the back of the inn, Quentin tensed. His heartrate accelerated, and his breathing deepened to the point he felt his nostrils flare with each exhale. His hands at his sides formed fists. He struggled with little success not to stare at the back of the auburn-haired woman. He calculated that Jude would veer to the right immediately behind her. Just turn your head long enough to glance at her. That will be enough for you to know it’s not her. As his steps brought him within a foot of the chair in which the woman sat, he felt his gut clench. It will soon be over.
