A Watchman for Willow
Mail Order Papa, Fourth Book
by Zina Abbott
“The reason I wished to speak with you involves a newspaper advertisement that was brought to my attention. It was for a city night watchman position.” Turning her gaze aside, Mrs. Morrow inhaled deeply and lifted her chin.
Milton immediately tensed. So, this has nothing to do with collecting the rent. He hoped she might have been frugal in nature and too busy to have bought the issue of the Union Democrat in which he placed the advertisement.
“One of the qualifications was that the successful candidate must be willing to consider marriage to a widow with a young child. Are you aware of that particular solicitation?”
“Ah, yes, I am. I was tasked with submitting the advertisement for the position.” Milton’s eyes behind his spectacles involuntarily rounded, and he swallowed. Rotten luck, she picked up on that. There was nothing but for him to bull ahead and minimize her concerns. He watched as, her lips parted, Mrs. Morrow hesitated. As she narrowed her eyes and studied him, his breathing grew ragged. At the same time, his shoulders twitched and the muscles in his back stiffened.
“Mr. Pierson, I know it is presumptuous to assume that the widow with a small child referred to me and Ila Mae. I’m sure I’m not the only woman whose situation fits that description.”
There might be others, but, yes, I thought of you and the child. Milton forced his body to remain still and willed his face not to reveal the panic now coursing through him. The last thing he wished was to offend this woman—or give her cause to complain to the mayor and city council.
“However, I know you are aware of my circumstances. You have been very helpful getting me established here in Sonora.”
“Of course, Mrs. Morrow. I consider it part of my Christian duty to help those who find themselves in difficult circumstances, especially after the loss of a family member. I was happy to assist.” Breathing a sigh of relief, Milton Pierson licked his lips.
