          “I’m going to take Blackie with me tomorrow. They’re giving us a day off work for Thanksgiving. I’ll plan to ride directly to your stepmother’s house so I can see you again. Will you let me in the door?” Wearing a teasing grin, David released her hand.

          “Yes.” Lila smiled. “If worse comes to worse, find Jeremy like you did last time. He can get a message to me, and I’ll meet you by the carriage house again.”

          “All right. I’ll hold you to it. I’ll see you Wednesday evening.” David dropped his smile. “I have to see you one more time before you return to Iowa, Lila. I know you have obligations back there. It wouldn’t be right for me to interfere with your plans. However, if I had my way, I’d persuade you to stay in Colorado.”

          “I’ll look forward to Wednesday and wish you a happy Thanksgiving when I see you again. Good night, David. You need to take poor Dusty home and inside his barn. You need to get some sleep before it’s time to get up for work.” Lila opened the door wider and stepped inside her room. She closed her door until it remained open only a crack. She watched David wave one last time and then turn and walk toward the stairway.

          Once the echo of David’s footsteps clattering down the stairs ended, Lila closed her door and locked it. She turned and leaned against it, pressing her head into the solid wood. She heaved a sigh. Do I really want to return to Iowa City and leave David behind?
