Saturday Snippet: His Gaze Followed Her

The following snippet was taken from

Lighthouse Escape

Keepers of the Light series, Book 13

(This book on sale 8/07 to 8/13)

John finished his breakfast. As he leaned back in his chair, he raised his hand to his face to cover the large yawn that followed. “I need to find my bed. If not, I won’t be any help to Arend.” He stood and gathered his dishes in both hands. He turned toward the sink only to find Stina standing in front of him.

“I’ll take them.” Stina grabbed both his bowl and his plate in her hands.

Unable to tear his gaze away from her face, John still held onto his dishes. He grinned as he studied the rich blue of her eyes framed by dark brown lashes.

          “Ahem.”

Clady’s throat clearing brought John to his senses. “Thank you, Stina.” He released his hold. He picked up his cup of coffee. As he drained the last few drops, his gaze followed her as she walked to the slop bucket and scraped off what little remained.

A loud knock sounded on the back door.

John turned to face the direction from which the sound came. In his peripheral vision, he saw that Clady did the same. Within seconds, Stina joined her mother.

“I’ll get it.” Clady started toward the rear entrance. “We don’t get visitors. Who could it be?” She shook her head.

John followed. In case there is trouble, or something I need to tell Arend. He realized Stina now walked at his side, but slightly behind.

On the other side of the door stood a young man, someone John did not know.

“Eddie? Eddie Paulson?” Stina stepped forward and turned to her mother. “I know Eddie from school, Mor.” She turned to Eddie. “Come inside, Eddie. What brings you to the lighthouse?”

“Good morning, Miss Dinesen, Mrs. Dinesen…” Eddie nodded to each of the women in turn before he turned to face John. “Sir. I have a telegram for a…” He reached into his jacket pocket and pulled out a sealed envelope. “Do you have a Mr. John Andersen spelled with an ‘e’ instead of an ‘o’ here?”
