As soon as Cole heard the approaching horse, he shook his head with frustration. Is Mr. Barker out here checking on us again? Hammer in hand, he looked up from the rail he nailed into the fencepost only to discover, much to his surprise, it was Miss Barker—Amelia—riding up to the worksite.

          Amelia pulled Lady to a slow walk as she approached the trio. “How’s it going out here?” Lady came to a stop, and she dismounted.

          All three men stopped and turned to her.

          “Well as can be expected, Miss Barker.” Buster, who freckled more than he tanned, tipped his hat at Amelia, and then removed it completely. He used his free hand to pull a bandanna from his pocket and mop his forehead and curly brown hair. “Getting hot out here, I can tell you.”

          “Done got hot, Miss Barker.” Hal, a thin man with light brown hair tipped his hat and turned his gaze to the wagon. “Figure, as long as we’re taking a break, it’s a good time to get some water.” He turned to Cole. “That okay with you, Boss?”

          “Stop that, Hal.” Cole huffed and shook his head. “Just because Mr. Barker told me to make sure this got done doesn’t make me the boss. It just means my head is on the chopping block if he’s not happy with the job. Go get your water.” He waved toward the wagon. “Probably a good idea for all of us.”

          “Don’t have to ask me twice.” Buster also turned toward the wagon.

          His hands on his hips, Cole shook his head as he watched the other two men almost run toward the water casket in the back of the wagon. He turned to Amelia. “Would you care for some water, Miss Barker?”
