Saturday Snippet: He Felt His Heart Sink Within Him

          Upon hearing the voice of an unknown man, Michael turned to see who had joined their group. He felt his heart sink inside him. It was his dark-haired beauty’s husband, the older gentleman with hair more gray than dark brown. He had seen the two together back in St. Joseph. When did I start thinking of her as my dark-haired beauty?

          Michael stepped forward and held his hand out. “Hello, sir, my name is Michael Stanwyck. I’m a merchant who used to live just north of St. Louis. I’m on my way west with a load of merchandise to set up shop there, and I’ve attached my three wagons to this freight train. These two young men, both of whom offered to help the Alderman daughters, work for me.” He gestured toward Will and Jeremy, who had joined the two girls by the lead oxen.

          “I’m Will Clayton, and this here is Jeremy Watson, sir.” Grinning, Will turned to face the newcomer. “We saw you and your wagon while we were still back in St. Joe.”

          “Pleased to meet you, Mr. Clayton and Mr. Watson.” The newcomer nodded to each young man. “I’m Henry McCartney, and this is my daughter, Pearl.” Mr. McCartney gestured toward the dark-haired beauty. “I’m sorry, I don’t recall seeing you back in St. Joseph. I assume you’ve met the Alderman family?”

          “Some of them, sir. We just got here.” Will turned toward the man’s daughter. “Nice to meet you…is it miss or ma’am?”

          “It’s Miss McCartney.”
