Top Ten List:

1. Museums and art galleries. Believe it or not, these can be very inspiring.

2. Animals – I share animal rescue stories on Twitter and Facebook and sign every petition that crosses my path. I also contribute monthly to two animal rescue charities.

3. The countryside – I live in the countryside now and it has changed my whole perspective on life. Open skies and green fields make walking with my dog a lovely experience.

4. Books – maybe that should be at the top? I love books of all kinds and very much enjoy non-fiction as well. I have some new empty bookshelves so I am working on filling them.

5. Research for my books. This can be so absorbing I sometimes find a few hours have passed and I have been lost in history and done a lot of research but no writing.

6. Dinner parties – I love having small dinner parties with guests who enjoy good food, good wine, and lots of good conversation.

7. Antiques – I have inherited a lot from my great-grandmother and grandmother so being surrounded by beautiful antique furniture and ornaments is all quite normal for me. I also feel they help me get into the mood for my forays into the past.

8. Movies and TV series – I love BBC classic series such as adaptations of Jane Austen’s works. But I also love mystery/thriller and crime series. Disaster movies are my thing!

9. Tea – I love tea, all kinds of tea. I cannot start the day without my pot of morning tea. I enjoy going to a tea room where you can have a delicious English afternoon tea with scones, small cakes and other yummy treats.

10. Desserts – simply the best part of the meal. My ultimate dessert is Crème Brulee, then Tiramisu, and next is home made ice cream.

When Helena Wainwright accompanies her two young nieces and her nephew to stay at Rotherham Park with their new guardian who is their uncle, the Duke of Rotherham, she agrees to remain for six months to help the children adjust to their new life. Emily’s mother is hell-bent on marrying her daughter off to a rich, preferably titled, man. She will let nothing stand in her way, even stooping to abduction and possibly murder. 

Can Helena win in the face of heavy odds and the machinations of a wicked schemer? And will she want the Duke of Rotherham for herself when hidden elements of his romantic past come to light?

“They hate me, Vernon.” Miss Fanshawe hiccupped and looked up in a piteous, tear-drenched plea. She had clearly mastered the art of crying and could achieve this without her complexion turning blotchy or her nose becoming red. If it were possible, her eyes appeared bigger and more luminous, and her long eyelashes fringed the effect in a most becoming way. When Helena cried, the effect was unpleasant to the degree it was best she cried alone.

“Your children hate me.”

The lady’s wiles were so transparent that Helena wanted to shake her and tell her to stop her hysterics at once, but the duke seemed to enjoy murmuring soft words of encouragement to his guest. He even patted her small, delicate hands.

10 Fun Facts
1.        Arabella Sheraton is a pseudonym but if I tell anyone who I really am, I’ll have to kill them…
2.        The image I use for Arabella is a portrait my grandmother painted many years ago of her best friend. It seemed a fitting tribute to my wonderful grandmother and her friendship.
3.        I love anything olde worlde, which means that since I write in the genre of Regency romance, perhaps I lived once upon a time in Jane Austen’s era. Who knows? I like to think so.
4.        Pride and Prejudice is my favorite Austen book and book to series adaptation. I just love Mr. Darcy, even when he is acting like a starched shirt.
5.        I have always loved reading romances set in the Regency era, and I think that has a lot to do with the fact that apart from my mom having all the Austen books, she was also an avid Georgette Heyer fan, and as a result, so am I.
6.        I am never short of ideas for a Regency novel and sometimes a title just pops into my head and from that comes a book.
7.        I wrote my first Regency romance to entertain my aged mom, now passed on, who loved the genre.
8.        I generally find the past more fascinating than the present.
9.        My second favourite book to series adaptation is North and South starring the divinely sexy Richard Armitage.

Q & A With the Author:

1.     When did you write your first novel?

My mom asked me to write her a Regency romance story because she was tired of the ones she’d read before. I had already written a children’s novel, so I felt quite confident and I love the Regency era. Coming from a background in publishing, it feels as if I have been writing forever.

2.     What drove you to write / why did you become an author?

I always wrote for fun, then I drifted into editing and publishing, and then suddenly I was writing books. Once you have started, it’s impossible to stop.

3.     How do you create your characters?

Interestingly, all I do is think of a catchy title and the rest all sort of happens by itself, as if the characters are waiting in the wings and just need me to create the title to bring them to life.

4.     What is one thing you love about Fall / Autumn?

The weather is so lovely and cool, not the heat of summer or the biting cold of winter. Fall is just in between and very comfortable. Plus, the leaves are changing colour and I love that.

5.     Who is the person or group of people that most support you in your writing?

My mother was my biggest supporter and fan. Without her I would never have been able to write full time and without her encouragement, I might have given up. Sadly, she has passed on, but I think of her every day and her encouragement is evergreen in my mind.

6.     What is your favorite Halloween Memory?

Telling my three younger brothers and their friend spooky stories about a haunted house and a gang of intrepid youngsters who fight off vampires, werewolves, skeletons and the like to survive!

Q&A With the Author:

1.        Tell us about things you enjoy — what you do for fun or personal satisfaction besides writing?

Reading of course is top of the list! I enjoy living in the countryside rather than the city and I am fortunate so I can take long walks with my dogs. I love movies, especially BBC historical movies or book to movie adaptations. Art, music, theater, anything cultural appeals to me, and of course travel is important.

2.        When did you first realize you were an author?

I have always scribbled a bit, writing comical poetry, and I wrote editorial articles for magazines for years, but when my mother asked me to write her a Regency romance, that was when I started to take the idea seriously.

3.        Have you done anything writing-related, but besides actually writing your books, that seemed to get a lot of positive response? Something that encouraged you?

I worked for many years in magazine publishing, so I had my fair share of nonfiction writing. Now I also teach novel writing which is very rewarding. I am very proud when a student completes the course and has a finished manuscript in their hand.

4.        What is the thing you struggle with the most while writing? And how do you defeat it?

The only thing I struggle with is finding the time to do my own writing. I am also an editor for a book review company and that as my day job and tutoring aspiring writers takes up time. I find making lists of time slots when I can squeeze in my own work really helps.

5.        What is the “message” of your writing? (For example, is your purpose to encourage old-fashioned values, encourage romance, or do you have different purposes in different books?)

My books are historical romances, set in the Regency era, when a man courted a woman with serious intentions, and because of the social restrictions, and the impossibility of jumping into bed on the first date, the couple had to take the time to get to know each other as people. They also had to become friends first. So I do think the message is cultivating what people might think of as ‘old fashioned’ values, but actually these values are timeless and good. If a couple starts off becoming friends, finding the glue that will keep them together, they will still be together when the initial glow wears off and they settle down to the reality of making a life together. Proper courtship and romance are important.

6.        Are your characters/stories/scenes, etc. based on anything in real life?

Again, I think that romance and real-life situations abound no matter what era one writes in. I might read about something in the news and that sparks an idea for a story.

7.        What are your future projects?

I am busy with a (wait for it) completely different kind of Regency romance. This is a murder mystery/time travel romance called To Murder a Marquis. It is absolutely fascinating; still Regency but such fun! Here’s a teaser: When Jane Carstairs goes to Chelston Hall to complete the archival project her father had been commissioned to do, things turn very weird from the moment she gets there. Jane wakes up in the woods at Chelston Hall, only it's no longer 2015 ... it's 1815, and she's faced with the discovery of a possibly dead man, who is the spitting image of her current employer - the Marquis of Chelston - and the growing feeling that something is very wrong. Jane has somehow slipped back in time, but why? Is she the one destined to save the marquis so that the line can continue? And how can she stop falling in love with a man who is from another era? Can she go back to her own century? Does she want to, ultimately?
