Saturday Snippet- I Can Ask What Sort of Help She Needs

Featuring "Christmas in July" Books

Today's Saturday Snippet is taken from

Marigold

Christmas Quilt Brides, Book 2

by Zina Abbott

“Mari, are you all right? I was afraid what I said earlier upset you. It’s not what I wanted to do, but…” George dipped his head as he studied Marigold.

“No, George, don’t worry about it.” Marigold shook her head. “You were right. It just caught me off-guard. I’ll…well, I’ll take care of the banking and buying fabric tomorrow, after school. I think I’ll visit Joey’s house on Saturday. That will give me a chance to ask him again for directions, plus I’ll be able to rent a buggy and go in the daytime.”

“Are you sure, Mari?” Her brow creased, and her lips pressed together, Rose stared at her sister.

“Yes, I’m sure.” Marigold clasped her hands together and raised her chin. “I won’t have the jacket ready, yet. I don’t sew that fast. But, I can at least meet Joey’s mother and find out exactly what is making her sick. I can ask her what sort of help she needs.”

“Mari, on Saturday, wait long enough for me to ride into town so I can go with you.” George took several steps into the room. “I’ll be happy to drive the buggy, plus you won’t find yourself out alone, searching for a place you’ve never been to before. Maybe, if there’s something she needs, like more firewood chopped, I can help with that while you and she talk.”

Marigold blinked and stared at George for several seconds before answering. “Thank you, George. If it won’t keep you from something important, I’ll take you up on your offer.” She then said goodbye as everyone waved and left her house. After closing the door behind them and finding herself alone once more, she turned and, her gaze unfocused, stared across the open room. George Burdock offered to drive me to a student’s house? She was so accustomed to doing everything herself, with possibly only Rose for company, she found it incredible that a man, who only a few months ago, had been a stranger, offered to accompany her.

Saturday Snippet: I must use all the tools at my disposal

For those who love "Christmas in July" books,

today's snippet is taken from

Marigold

Christmas Quilt Brides series

…I’m surprised you put locks on your carriage house and where you live.” George removed the nosebag from his buckskin and closed the door behind him. He offered his elbow. “Most people are pretty honest. I know very few people who bother to lock their doors.”

“That might be true in the country, but not in town. I got into the habit of locking my place when I lived in Cutler. Especially once the school board made an issue of wanting me to move out sooner than my contract required, I put a lock on the door and gave Rose strict instructions not to leave the house unless the windows were securely closed and the door locked. I didn’t want anyone to come inside during our absence and move our things outside.”

“For some reason, Mari, I cannot picture you giving anyone instructions unless you do so in a strict manner.” A teasing tone to his voice, George bent forward and turned to face Marigold.

Marigold lifted her chin and jerked her face until her gaze met George’s. “Sometimes, one must do what one must do. I quickly discovered, if I wished to be taken seriously, I must use all the tools at my disposal. I am not the tallest of women. Even Rose is taller than I am. Therefore, I must impress upon people that I am determined. Otherwise, there are those who will use their greater height and girth to try to walk all over me.” She continued to hold his gaze as he seemed to study her face.
