Saturday Snippet: I'LL THINK ABOUT IT

 The following snippet is from Millwright's Daughter,

one of nine novellas in the

          Caroline jerked her hand through the air. “Phffft! The marriage record was gone, just like that. Fortunately, the couple’s parents had recorded the details in the family Bible. They took that and the two witnesses to the county courthouse and was able to get it recorded so there was no question the marriage was legal.”

          Kit, his eyes twinkling, tamped down a smile. “I’m sure the marriage was recorded in heaven, Mrs. Arnold, as well as properly on earth in spite of the mishap. I imagine the Methodist circuit rider suffered genuine remorse over the incident, particularly since he lost his horse and probably barely escaped with his life. Maybe it’s time to forgive him.”

            Caroline pursed her lips and looked off to the side. “Perhaps. I’ll think about it.”

Saturday Snippet- He Didn't Want to be Trustworthy

The following snippet is from Millwright's Daughter,

          Kit stepped next to Eliza to whisper in her ear. “What are you doing here? Are you aware of what it will do you your reputation if you are caught in a place like this with a man?”

          Eliza’s soft laugh sounded closer than Kit expected. “I know, but I need to talk to you privately. I discovered this supply closet a few months ago when I was looking for the indoor necessary. I stumbled upon a couple entangled in each other’s arms, so I knew this would work.”

          The thought of being entangled in Eliza’s arms sent all other thoughts flying from his head. He closed his eyes as he sensed her lean her mouth closer to his ear. However, as she continued, the tone in her whisper grew serious. “Mr. Halsey, I need help. Can I trust you?”

          Right then, Kit did not want to be trustworthy. He wanted to kiss senseless the woman standing so close to him their bodies touched in several places. However, he had a job to do. His sense of integrity warned him to not take unfair advantage of someone who would not have put herself in this position unless she felt it urgent. “You can trust me, Eliza. However, in the future, you would be wise to determine if a man is trustworthy before you place yourself within the confines of a dark closet with him. Some men will take advantage.”

Saturday Snippet- Worth Wait & Ada's Texas Cavalryman

 The following snippet is taken from Worth the Wait by Patricia PacJac Carroll, one of nine novellas in the Under a Mulberry Moon anthology:

          Disgusted with the rundown ranch, Charlie dismounted and walked his horse to the remnants of the corral on the side of the hut.

          “I thought maybe you weren’t coming.” Startled, he looked up. How had he missed her? Lucky for him the war was over and she wasn’t a Johnny Reb, or he’d be needing a grave. The woman must have come out of the soddy, but mostly, he noticed the rifle angling down her arm to her legs. She raised the gun level with his chest. “Charlie Ransom?”

          He nodded, tearing his gaze from the gun to her face. “Ruby?” She wasn’t bad looking. He certainly could have done worse.

          She smiled. “I told you I was coming. I stopped in Duston, and they told me how to get to here.” She waved a hand at the hut and corral. “Hope you didn’t pay much. Soddy can be fixed, but it’s going to take some doing.”

          “I’d hoped to have it ready before you came. Wrote to tell you to wait—”

          “I’ve been waiting all my life to be married. Grant’s army couldn’t have stopped me.” She stared at him. “You haven’t changed your mind?”

          “But I..." she stammered, wishing with her entire being that he would leave her alone, the scoundrel. 

          “I do believe I have a knock on me noggin'.” He removed his hat and rubbed the back of his head with his fingers. Leaning forward he said, "If ye'll just touch this, right here?"

          She pulled her hand out of his reach. He was either daft or fishing for attention. He suddenly oozed charm and his conversation dripped with an Irish brogue. While she had tried to ignore him, she admitted he possessed a certain appeal. Against her better judgement, she asked, “Would a cup of coffee and one of Maude’s cinnamon rolls make you feel better?”
