Saturday Snippet: Why Can't You Bring My Real Mama Back?

The following snippet is taken from

A Shopkeeper for Christmas

Spinster Mail-Order Brides series, Book 33

A scowl on his forehead and his lips pushed out in a pout, Willie Cardsdale folded his arms and kicked at a clump of ice-crusted snow that clung to the edge of the railroad platform. “I don’t wanna new mama. I want my real mama.”

“Now, Willie, none of that. We must be nice to Miss Barker when she arrives. She’s made a special trip out here to get to know us better.” Owen, his arms also folded, stared off to the side. Why did I ever let Aunt Aggie talk me into this?

“I don’t wanna  know her better.” Willie stomped his foot. “I heard you and Aunt Aggie talking. You’re going to make her my new mama, aren’t you? Why can’t you bring my real mama back?”

Owen, his jaw clenched and his eyes growing round, stared at his son. How do I answer that? Although my life has been more peaceful with her gone, for Willie’s sake, it would be easier to still have Jenny. I hate courting another woman. Shaking his head, he turned his gaze to his aunt and held his hands out in supplication.

Aggie stepped forward and crouch in front of Willie. She brushed aside the blond fringe of hair on his forehead and then gently tugged his knit cap over his ears. “Sweetheart, nothing is settled yet. From her letters, Miss Barker seems like a very nice lady. However, we will get to know her in person first before anything is decided.” She smiled and, in an effort to capture his gaze with hers, she used her knuckle to tilt Willie’s chin up. “Something we all much learn, Willie, is this. No matter our personal feelings about a situation, we must give people a chance. That means, we don’t decide we don’t like people before we even meet them.” She rose to her feet and, with a telling expression on her face, she turned her gaze toward Owen.
